LAPPING QUESTION?

I have an 800 grit japanese stone by King co. and am wanting to know the consensus of you pros and near pros on how to lap this thing.:confused::thinking:

Also, I have a razor {Torrey} with a pinhead size chip :cry: in the center of the blade and am wondering if this stone will be ample to cut it out? Also have Norton 4000/8000, and a barber hone.

i think best will be dmt 325 grit plate or lower for lapping. if there is money issue any flat surface and sand paper will do the job. You will need at least 325 and end it with 1000 grit sand paper.Your stones is good enough to take out that small chip.

Regarding the Torrey, first, they tend to be great razors--much better than your DA! Do you have any means of magnification? That is the easiest way to watch for the chip to be completely removed. The 800 grit hone will be fine for removing the chip. To speed up the process, you might want to do some circle honing or Japanese strokes till the chip is removed. Then move on to the 4k for either a straight progression or pyramids. Make sure your Norton 4k/8k is also lapped.

As far as the lapping of the 800 should I just make a pencil grid on stone and lap till gone. also should lapping be done wet or dry? Yes I have 60-100 magnifier. Have not used but i'm sure i'll be able to see if a chip is gone. I'm not too blind i hope.

always lap under running water
pencil will be fine.

The benefit of magnification is that when you have honed out MOST of the chip, you will no longer be able to see it with the naked eye as the remnant will be just a sliver of a gap. Only with magnification will you know exactly when it is completely gone without honing beyond what you need.

For the lapping, it you want it completely flat, do the grid twice. Lap until the first grid is removed and then draw on another grid. If it is flat, that second grid will be quickly and uniformly removed.
