I got halfway through it, may I have half a cookie?

YES! And they are typically obsessive compulsive full grown adults who will read everything before they buy anything. I for one don't worry about our newbies because they aren't fools.
When I got into honing, I read what Lynn says, Glenn says, PMed RandyDance, talked Howard's ear off and got lots of great advice from el alamein at smf (elbonator here I think), and got real comfortable before I bought anything. I think the only hone purchase I made that I wouldn't repeat is my BBW, and it was pretty cheap. I enjoyed Bart's posts but what he said never really resonated to me and when I tried it didn't do much for me, but the other guys' stuff really worked for me, so that's what I do, and I took pieces of advice from each. I think that's pretty typical. People here are thorough and aren't easily misled.
Ok, where's my cookie?
I am a casual honer for my self i have one mate who i met through here srp and i have sheared my honing experiance with him in person and he made me a balsa paddle and i gave him some ch.5 pwder for free so it all good. weve honed several blades together and we have borrowed each others differant hones. I enjoy honing and i'll be onest i wished i had more old razors to hone if it takes me two hours or five i don't mind the end result is what matters now have got alot better i'm a lot quiker because i no what i can use for what situation my stroping is quiker i can do 100 laps on a coti in five minutes easy it would took me 5 times longer when i first started out honing. With what i have learned i like setting bevel on dmt rather than my norton 1k i like going bbw s then yellow water it does work realy consistant for me but as i own 4k/8k i like to slot them in before my bbw/coti and for me it is very consistant.
Not if you're patient. I got my first bout from howard for like $60. The next 4 coticules were all combos and cost me a total of $50-$60 on ebay. Be patient and persistent and Ebay will reward you. :)
Plus that Naniwa 12K is over $70, I know I can find a coti combo for less than that.
Not really...
[Edit: why is it so hard to find the hones at SRD?]
[Edit: Okay, currently just half the line of naniwa at SRD (1k - 10k) will cost $250 + shipping. I got a Japanese hone and a BBW/Coticule natural combination hone for less than that. But that is not really the point, is it? Different tools for different workers, different jobs, different preferences regardless of the price. Though the naniwa seem to be a great hone for the price, they are not the only option as far as cost is concerned]

dubl duck GOLDEDGE STRAIGHT RAZOR MINT & IS SHAVE READY - eBay (item 160337219019 end time May-30-09 08:11:07 PDT)
YOU may change your mind?
I for one know that I love my coticule. Not just because it turned me on to narrow hones or that it costs $3. It is what it is, and does as it does; and it is a terrific stone.
So I like the way it works, I can enjoy shaving right off the stone, - an interesting jumping off point; a standard or something-
(8K shapton is not really interesting;)) synthetics are very cool, excellent but that's it
The garnet is non-friable. I know what that means, but using garnet sandpaper will make you think they are... so i'm not sure what friable means sometimes.
The abrasives of Japanese stones are friable so there is not so much (as far as I know) the idea of slurry dulling, rather that slurry is friing getting finer:shrug:
I have brought 5 restored razors from this chap and one was a 6/8 duble duck and trust me when he says near new they are mint and i highly recomend. They come totaly shave ready and he uses 4k 8k and finishes on 12k kitiyama and i do believe he is now finishing on diamond paste 0.5 .25. That is it . he told me he as never used coti etc
I no people see this all the time. All the vendors that sell yellow coticule say how easy it is to get a very fine edge of coticule all you do is create a very fine slurry and away you go That is in the adds such as cs if you read . When i got mine i have done exactly that honed on slurry stroped and shaved. tpt feels good every time but whilst shaving i find resistants and never had a great shave straight of slurry Does any one actualy shave straight of yellow slurry? that is all i need to no. i tryed many times an still the same. Finishing by diluting to water as i no does improve or slotting bbw in then water on yellow improves quite alot paste helps i carn't understand why blue slurry produces better sharper edge than yellow slurry edge. That does confuse me. I love honing on slurry it feels great this is why i keep trying but does'nt work for me.
Whether Bart's conclusions that the slurry on the yellow dulls while it cuts is correct of not I don't pretend to know for sure but that appears to be what is happening. I have done well diluting the slurry or just using the blue/slurry and then the yellow with water only. I haven't experimented with shaving after the yellow/slurry without finishing on the yellow with water only. If shaving after the yellow with water is better then I would stick with that.
So I've stressed my tiny coticules with 15 razors during the past three days.
Anything from getting nicks out to polishing - and
I just love the noise!!!...and they work really well, even with french steel.
Time to get a decent size, me thinks. :)
