Silicium, AlOx and Diamond Films

Tonight I'm moving "to the other side". :)
Somebody really nice gave me some films to play with:

Diamond 280
Diamond 600
Diamond 1000
Diamond 16000
Diamond 50000

in open bond

AlOx 1200 and 1800
AlOx 8000 and 5000

Silicon carbide 600
Silicon carbide 1000

embedded bond.

Absolutely generous!
Some are already mounted on glass plates, some loose.

Now do you think I can use them just like a hone?
What about the stroke? Bevel leading?

I've got seven razors here ready to get honed.
Nothing fancy to do about, like chips or such, no big smiles either.
All not so bad stuff like Twin Works, Dorko, Hammesfahr, Keil etc.

use as you will use hone.
tape the back of the blade.

They are fast!!!!

I use diamond lapping film for all my honing work from 6 micron down to 1, then finish on .5 chromium. I can say they are super fast cutters and leave an amazingly clean/smooth edge. Saraphim has posted some great edge images under magnification.

Shaving off the 1 micron is even very comfortable. I could probably pass on the pasted strop, but do so out of habit.

Now I'm through with my razors, my weekend and with most of the films, LOL

It is a tiny bit frustrating that they do wear off.
But I got such results that I'll probably go for more.
Will have to improve technique for the next ones.

Last thing I did today was honing a Dahlgren wedge that was a tiny bit chipped.
It has some pretty wide surfaces you can see yourself in now,
a wicked edge and I got it all done in half of the time I normally need on hones.
Even less maybe.
Too bad it exhausted quite some the film. Is that normal?

Great sound, great speed and a wonderful result!

The diamond films do wear down, but are still quite useable for a fairly long time, they just won't be as aggressive as they were when new. Just use them until they stop working.

Worn out lapping sheets are also good for polishing blades. etc...
