I have just set a bevel with my 1k naniwa and i just carn't seem to get that real drag over my tnt tpt also feels not sticky like normal a thew laps on the dmt after and i got that real drag tnt and tpt feels so sharp i carn't understand this any one else experianced this or is there a simple explanation?
Dunno, I set my first bevel with a Naniwa 1k yesterday and it was fast and easy. A HC 8/8 Henckles. Maybe that particular razor ? I am going to be doing more in the next couple of days so I will be better able to assess it. Loving the Naniwas so far though.

I have watched the video prevous and it does look easy . I've set bevels a thousand times taken big chips out with my dmt 1200 took me 3 hours once if not 4 for but it worked. I can sense when the edge is ready of my dmt it defanatley feels sharper a touch with dmt. 1k naniwa feels somwhat sharp i tyed again with 1k then did laps on dmt more drag once again and stickier on tpt i have lapped naniwa several times and it does feel fine and is flat so i finished on the 1k 30 3k 20 5k of the 5k the edge felt alot sharper then 10 8k 10 12k stroped and edge strugled to pass hht on thick hair althought it did not that it proves any thing.Quote:

I have honed athew of razors with naniwas and they have given me great shaves i've had to go back a couple of times but they do create a nice edge but the norton 4k/8k seem work well for me.
I have the norton 1k when i got my dmt1200 i must admit i never used the 1k norton since i was realy impressed with the dmt1200 from the start.

Some razors take longer than others, it depends on the steel. Do you have anythng that's coarser than a 1k, say a 220k or something?
no 1k is all i have the razor stainless but to be fair the bevel was'nt far off the dmt soon got the sharpness i wanted.Quote:

I would venture to say that no hone of comparable grit will cut as fast as a DMT. I like my 1200 very much and I have set many a bevel with it but I have found some edges didn't need that aggressive a hone and some chipped using it. Still with an old Sheffield wedge where a lot of metal needs to be removed or some of the tougher alloys I think it is indispensable.

Ya know, the truth of the matter is that some of us are constantly looking for that holy grail of sharpening and finding out that once that blade comes off the strop, its generally not much different than the method we have been using and are now trying to replace. I have never been able to just go to a new type of stone and seemlessly use it like my other ones. There always seems to be some little difference in technique or whatever that makes the process slower to reach that finished product. So the reality is, I guess, if the system you are using works then why change it? Sure wish I had the answer for that one. I guess the only consolation I have is that if I am pressed for time, and can't get a combination to work, I can always fall back on some other method that will.

jimmy So the dmt does cut a lot quiker than any 1k naniwa. Like ray says i can always fall back to what works. I like experimenting with differant hones it makes it more interesting i have had outstanding edges on touch up razors as good if not better on one acasion so i do like them and will carry on using them the other thing is i like holding my hones as i hone it feels more natural to me my dmt is 6x2 my belgiums combo is 5x2 and a 5x3 my norton combo i even hold that fairly easy i find holding the naniwas good because they are realy light. I have tryed honing with them on table and i manage but i just carn't get use to it especialy when performing rolling x i have to hold hone up to me .
Yes we all experiment and find what works for us. For instance I do not like honing holding the hone in my hand. I have tried it and find that I prefer a stable surface. For me holding the hone leaves too much variation in the process yet I know that many competent honers do fine with that method.Quote:

At first I didn't like the feel of edges that I got with the paste. I put the paddle aside for months. On coming back to it and giving the paste another try I have found that for some razors it is just the ticket. Keeps life interesting.
Some times a stone or a method is just not for you and that sounds like the case here. I personally find the DMT very abrasive as is the Norton 1K. The Naniwa 1K has been my go to for bevel setting for the last couple thousand razors and before that I was enjoying the Shapton and before that I was enjoying the Norton. I have tried others as well, but these have been the best performers. I really hate honing with anything hand held as I just find it too unstable. To me the most important thing is using what works for you. I'm not saying quit experimenting, but when you have confidence in somthing, then it will normally work better for you.

I've tryed the 1k naniwa tonight and i swear its not cutting as well as it should and btw i did it on table top and i'm getting use to it now. I kept it clean by lapping it i realy carn't under stand this i have set bevels on the norton no probs and dmt i hone and check everten laps and i'm just not getting past a certain level i'd move on but razors not cutting any arm hairQuote:

5k nani is a very light blue and 1k is a medium dark blue. Of course the stone is marked on the end but you might have a point there about being the wrong size.

When i hone on the 1k i hone and hone till the point where its just not making any progress and i no that is not normal is your 1k quite porous because mine is not it holds water on surface realy well i carn't even get it to shave arm hair. What i think i will do is dull this old razor and set bevel on my 3k and see if that works if it does then i no there is somthing wrong somwhere i will try.
Right i have just dulled the same razor by runing it across my hone 3 times i have honed on the 3k naniwa and after 40 laps i noticed slight keeness after 50 more stick sharp in total may be 150 to 200 passes may be less i did'nt count just tested but the same razor is now shaving leg hair unbelieveable differance i can honestly say the 1k just seemed to make razor duller and rough along my edge why i don't no could it be faulty hone they are man made i supose i'm not sure but the 3k just set my bevel fairly quik and beatiful and smooth hone at that .I new somthing was'nt right thats why i have kept tying and trying but no joy untill i used 3k weird.
This is crazy! If you would like, I would be willing to send you my 1k nani and let you try it to see if it is any different than yours. Send it back when you are done though...LOL. If you are interested, pm me with your information.

All the ones I have used have held water and I mainly re spray it every 3-4 razors as I am knocking water off with X strokes. How many different razors have you tried on the stone?? I have never shaved hair off a 1K so can't help you there. I find the TPT the optimal test for me. Maybe I'll give the other a little test as well.Quote:

I'm using tpt and it aint getting there not like dmt tpt on that hone gets there i used it halve way through using 1k naniwa and straight away i noticed the differance but also noticed going from 1k naniwa to 3k tpt starts to improve dramaticly and 5k also feel the differance.
The trouble is my thumbs a getting a bit roughed up throught tpt and i loose the smooth skin if you no what i mean
I have 2 ebay razors on there way i use 1k naniwa and see how i go. Bin doing pyramids with 5k 8k i find pyramids with 3k 8k are working better for me seems closer to 4k 8k norton and also i find these naniwas put a realy nice mirror edge on razor and leave much finer scratches also the hones now they are feeling smoother the more i use them getting to like them more with use just hope the 1k works on my ebays .
Gary, try 3k/5k and it is even better. Polish with the 8k. Speaking of Naniwa Superstones here. They live up to their name IME.Quote:

TPT for me is not as grabby as off a D8E, but the stone doesn't leave those deep scratch marks either. That might be the reason--the edge might "feel" sharper off a DMT because of the toothier edge. It polishes & sharpens up beautifully on the 5k. I'm using Japanese strokes (a little easier for me than circles) followed by light x-strokes on both and it works great. Might have to do a few heel/toe only strokes on a smiling blade, but it's not tricky.
Mine lapped fast (much faster than my new 12K), but the very ends (not the edges; those are fine) might need a bit more (they felt harsh, while the rest of the hone felt smooth). Probably just needs more lapping. Shave test today w/ a finickey blade was very nice!
I spoke to steve at invisable edge whom i sold me naniwas he was very helpful and said what you are saying in that dmt leaves a choppier edge which explain that grabing on tpt he said the 1k he found tpt felt toaly differant but once you move on 5k then 8k the edge will feel keener and that is what i have found . As for laping i've gave all my nani a good going over and they are with use now feeling very smooth with good feed back. They realy do leave a mirror bevel too even 1k seems to polish a little.Quote:
