well, i have all the equipt i have needed for a few weeks, but i need a hone, or a few. i know many have said norton 4000/8000, but i was just browsing e-bay, and i saw this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/NORTON-6-TRI-HON...QQcmdZViewItem
it just mentions hard or soft, etc...but i could not find any grit counts, and i am not sure if it is what i will need to restore some ebay finds...
any help would be cool

I have a Norton in the classifieds.

I think the Nortons are great for learning. They definitely work and you don't need oil which is messier to deal with anyway. I have heard good things about tri hone systems too, but I don't recall anything about oil with them.

Get the Norton from Tony. Its the easiest to use. if you are going to restore some Ebay specials then you will also need a 800-1000 grit hone and some sheets of 400-600 grit wet/dry sandpaper. The sandpaper is to rapidly remove major nicks in the blade. Just wet the paper and lay it over the Norton hone then start honing on the 400-600 until the nick is gone. Then move on to the finer grits. If the nick is minor, less than 1/4 the width of the bevel then start with the 800-1000 stone til the nick is gone, then move up to the 4000 stone.
Hope this helps, :)
