Is a norton stone the same thing as a japanese water stone? Are the grit values comparable?
The Norton is an American made waterstone and there is some small discrepancy with the grits. Somebody more knowledgeable than I will have to fill you in on that.

The only experience I've had is with a Shapton 15K and it wasn't very good. We figure it was the stone as other folks have had great luck with the pro series. The Norton grits are comparable from what folks tell me. The best Norton for a new person or experienced honer is the 4K/8K Combination. It produces the most consistent results with the shortest learning curve for most people. I think we have info either here or in the Yahoo site on both the Nortons and the Shaptons as well as vendors. I gotta get a Shapton pro series 12K.....lol. Lynn
There have been some issues with the Shapton 15K made for the American market. It's different from the 12k Japanese market stone but I am not sure how exactly. There is extensive discussion on knifeforums about stones. Pay particular attention to a poster named Yuzuha. This particular stone has it's own thread showing scratch patterns compared ot other stones.Quote:
