Thanked: 0Temporary success in refreshing my Dovo
I spent some time today refreshing the edge on my Dovo. I'm one of those guys who owns only two razors, and only one of those tends to get used much. The Dovo was getting a bit of tug to it, so I set out with my Norton 8k/4k stone for a refresh. There was also a tiny nick at the tip that I had been meaning to work out.
A solid 50 laps on the 4k smoothed out the nick entirely. Then 30 laps on the 8k and things were looking good. I use two sides of a pasted paddle strop to finish it up, followed by 50 laps on leather. At the end of the work, I had a super smooth shave so the effort was well worth the time.
I'm by no means an expert, but I've taken it on myself to tend to my own blade since taking up straight shaving 2 years ago. This was the first time I managed a true hanging hair test at the end, so I was pretty pleased with myself.
Of course, right at the end of the shave, I fumbled the thing and my gorgeous new home-worked edge hit the sink with a nice clank; followed quickly by the sound of my own uncontrolled sobbing.
Now I'm back to about ten yards shy of the starting line.
I guess practice is a good thing, but still . . .

Very nice! Sorry to hear about the razor though. If you need practice, there are always other people here looking to get their razors honed. A lot of people start out their honing business by taking requests before charging.
