which honing method works best

does anyone have any opion on which honing method works best? the pyramid method or just doing like 10 stokes on one grit then moving to the next grit?

I do not think there is best method, all that matters really is even strokes and steady hand. Oh and paying attention to how the razor responds to the honing also makes difference.

I'm no honemeister, but I think that using the Pyramid system is best, particularly for a new honer. Plenty of guys here on the forum get great results using any number of different methods and I don't mean to take anything away from their methods in any way. Bear in mind, however, that using a pyramid will give you consistent, repeatable results without requiring too much from the honer when it comes to experience level or feel.

I'll defer to the more experienced guys, but that's my opinion. I'm assuming that by "best" you mean "what would be the best way for me to start honing" as opposed to "which method gives me the best edge". The later scenario is a whole other can o' worms.

Learn the Pyramid technique and get it to work on at least 10 different razors then if you want go ahead and branch out from there...

We are also assuming you have the right stones to do this with...

I think it depends what is your stones.
if you are talking Norton 4/8k i would be agree go head learn Pyramid.
if you do have any other hones(shaptons,naniwa, Japan hones ,coticules etc etc) You need to know your stones.

Yep the Pyramid is the best way to give new guys a reliable way to begin honing and get great results from the get go. Many still use it even with experience. Once you know what you are doing then you can experiment if you have a mind to.

I am a newbie at honing and the pyramid method worked a treat for me:)

Just follow the straightforward instructions, repeat pyramid if necessary, and bingo a good shaving edge :)
