Norton Waterstone Starter Kit: 220/1000 grit stone, 4000/8000 grit stone, SiC flattening stone
I recently got a Norton oil stone and love it, thinking about one of these combo kits, looks like a pretty good deal for $116

I think most of us here have that set. It's practiaclly issued to you when you join here.:rofl2: I also have some old Norton Oil Stones which I primarily use for knives. They are about 12" x 2 1/2
Those water stones are excellent for razor sharpening. Check the wiki on the Pyramd using those hones here:

Thanks zib, yea I've got a number of waterstones but nothing like this kit. I really like the edge I'm getting off my translucent norton oil stone and thought I'd check these out.
Eventually you'll have to lap the flattening stone. If that doesn't bother you, that's a good set. I didn't want to mess with lapping a flattening stone, so I purchased the set from Craftsman Studio and then bought a DMT8C.
Norton Waterstones
you have to lap the silicon carbide flattening stone? interesting, thanks for the heads up.
Good set, but like keep said, get a DMT D8C for lapping.
The Norton lapping stone that comes with it isn't worth the trouble if you plan on honing a lot (gets dished out.)
Maybe list the lapping stone up on ebay or something separate after you get the set :)
+1. That is the set I started with. I also got the D8C for a more durable lapping plate but I do know at least one guy who swears by the Norton lapping stone and of course before diamond plates that is all that Lynn used IIRC. Anyway, Norton 1k,4k, 8k are good hones.
I have the set and so far, so good. The only problem I had was that whomever packed it for shipment used minimal packing and the flattening stone arrived broken. Amazon replaced it very quickly.
