Coticule honing + new stone ?

So I'm doing the dilucot thing from Bart since the day I got a coticule, and I do get superb shaves out of all razors that get a pass on it.

I just have a few questions left:

- When using a coticule with pure water, for the last 100 laps or so, do you just wet the coticule and go to town, or do you keep it really really wet throughout the 100 laps? I for one, keep pouring water on it after each 10 laps to keep it extremely wet/smooth, but I'm not sure if this is correct or not.

- Would anyone recommend getting another finishing stone, or is this more then good enough?

- I'm looking for a good bevel setting stone, one that can really take SERIOUS abuse. The stuff I'm now using sandpaper for. The sandpaper is not too expensive, but I'll soon have reached the cost of a hone I think so makes me think about getting a stone if it's reasonably priced. If that stone could handle breadknifing abuse as well, that would rock (no pun intended).

So in a nutshell, the water question & the question on another stone!

Get a DMT 1200 plate for your bevel-setting. You would then work on the following cycle for blunt blades: DMT, heavy slurry Cot, slurried BBW, water Cot.

You can try some lather or a nugget of shaving cream on the coticule after the water. I normally shave straight off that and really enjoy the shave.

I use coti and you don't need another finishing stone you could use a very fine paste.

I use dmt1200 6x2 in size for serious bevel correction then just coti dilucot method when finishing on water just keep it wet you don't have to flood it rinsing every 30 laps or so is good to do just incase your hone is creating a very fine slurry i don't use my bbw no more i just use coticule on its own hope this helps you should try unicot method works realy well and in a quarter of the time

Ok thanks, so no need for another one then. I'm still considering one for the bevel setting/resetting process.

I also almost never use the BBW, but I think I will reincorporate it in my routine, because I find it has a motivating factor to it, when you reach the blue stone, you're past the halfway mark (imo) :):mace:

I like to have an 8x3 DMT D8C 325 for lapping my hones. The 1200 DMT for bevel setting on some razors and the Naniwa 1k superstone for the majority of them. I like to use the blue with slurry. As Bart noted it will add keenness. Personally I keep a small spray bottle of the type that beauticians use handy. I give the work a schpritz when necessary. I like to keep enough vehicle on the hone to see the wave going up the bevel into the belly of the blade.

Jimmy is right on when it comes to the DMT's. If cost is a factor, get the 8x3 1200 DMT. It is my workhorse, when it comes to setting bevels, especially when it comes to anything with a chip or microchips. Don't forget to add a drop of dish soap to the water when using the DMT. It helps break the surface tension. Don't do that on any other stones though. You will also need to break in the DMT before you use it because it comes pretty rough.

As for the water on the Coti. Gary pretty much said it, rewet after about 30 laps. The idea, at that stage, is to not let a slurry build up. So, yes, you do not need to flood the surface all the time.

IIRC it is the DMTE here.

Don't the DMT-Es with the green plastic base (the diamond wet stones) work just as well as the all silver stones?

I like to use my BBW side as well in my honing process. Just yesterday I needed to remove steel a bit faster, so I hit the Coticule with slurry until I got my edge right, then The BBW with slurry to keen the edge up a bit, followed by Coticule with water. Like they said above, use a spray bottle with water in it and every 20 laps or so put 2-3 drops along the stone. That's all the water you should need.

Bart made a post a while ago, and I started doing this as part of my routine: Put a dab of CrOx with a few drops of water on the BBW side and polish my blades like that after the Coti+water. So far it has worked great, plus it gives me a little more time on the BBW which I like :)

After that, just strop and you should be good to go. I've been getting some really good shaves off this current method, but always looking for better LOL

I was wondering what the difference was. I have the one with the plastic base. I am guessing it only has to do with how long one will last over the other.

DMT says that the interrupted surface is a bit more aggressive. I haven't noticed much difference. The "holes" are said to help minimize swarf buildup. The red one in my current avatar is over 22 years old and well used. It's also been carried in my back pocket for all that time; very durable.

I have both types (7 w "polka-dots", 4 without). For razors, I think either type works fine.
