Varying bevel width?

Since my touch up with a BBW and Swatty I've noticed something. I noticed it a bit before but its way more apparent. The width of the bevel thins down to a a hair near the center on one side. On the other side its far more even, but thins out a bit towards the toe. It still seems to shave ok, but feels a bit odd stropping.

I assume this is a result of too much pressure while using the BBW? How hard is this to correct? What problems could this lead to? Do I need to have a pro reset the bevel or can I fix it with my BBW/Swatty/Chrome-Ox?

You can fix it yourself, but I think it takes some experience. I have one like that and it shaves okay, but not that great.

Its a pressure thing so really, its a pressure thing to fix it, just in the opposite places that it was screwed up the first time.

You a two handed honer? Now is the time to break that habit and then try and fix it later, I think

It seems that you have stones that will let you maintain your blade, but setting the bevel might be a little difficult with them. This time, I would also recommend that you send the razor out to someone and have the bevel set properly with a good honing. Perhaps as you gain more experience with your stones, and another razor you might pick up in the classifieds, you can handle this yourself.

It can also be caused by uneven grind or warped blade.

Could be that the spine is a bit out of whack. Straight razors don't always have perfectly symmetrical bevels in that case so if it is shaving okay it might not be shaving any better if it were 'corrected'. Just IMHO.

I have a few like that as well, and one was a NOS Wapi.

Pictures might help, but really if you have a bevel and it shaves fine, I wouldn't worry about it being uneven. It's just an aesthetic thing really.

Yes, I have been honing 2 handed. Weirdly, I honed the Stahl I have using pretty much the exact same method and it looks great. Odd. Well I'll keep shaving with my Dovo and see what happens, maybe I'll send it in for a rebevel later but it seems to shave well for the moment.

Took some pics but cant find the cable to upload them... Hopefully later today.

Uneven bevel has no negative effect on shaving as long as it is in a good shape otherwise. Some razors will have uneven bevels, learn to live with that and your life will be easier. ;)

That's the hard part isn't it sparq? My OCD wanted me to do everything I could to get a uniform bevel, but my desire to hold onto a fraction of my own sanity told me to let it go and live with it:roflmao

Sending it out might help. I suggest getting it fixed if it feels like it "strops funny". If you read the barbers manual from 1961 the method of correction is described in there, only difference is you'll be applying defined light pressure on the spots where the bevel is thinnest. But you'd have to be careful the problem doesn't just move to somewhere else.

Please don't take my comment as a criticism of 2 handed honing. I'm just very clear on cause and effect issues of honing.

But, like you said, it shaves well, and you know what that means around these parts! :)
