How do you do a test?

1. How do you do a hair test please. Is the possible a design to give?

2. What now the best method is to be sharpened?
Method according to Briandonofrio with a Norton 3" or the method according Norbert Schick on a X method????

I am much more a fan of the X pattern although recently there has been a few people experimenting with the straight drag down the stone. I feel you get a better cutting motion on the stone with the X pattern but that is my opinion based on honing over 4,000 razors. Each person develops their own personal preferences and every razor is different. For testing, I actually like shaving best. It lets me know how close I am and if I have over honed a razor. This also is personal preference as some cut hairs and use a thumb nail test.

Sir, .....Can the knife topple over really that way?

It is really more difficult than over the whole width of the stone?

The best method to sharpen your razor is actually one you discover for your self. As Lynn said, people here uses different methods with different results. I suggest you to go to help section on this site and read as much as you can. There is no shortcut to learn how to hone. Try both methods, or invent some more, and post the results. The X pattern is harder to learn, because at first it feels that there is no way you can keep the razor flat on the stone, but once mastered, it gives you better feel for the razor on the stone. The straight push is more straightforward at first, but many variables are in game. How true is the stone, is the edge curved or not e.t.c. You can't sharpen curved (with a smile) edge with straight push pattern unless you straighten it first, which I don't reccomend.
