Getting my razor honed

Hi. I've been lurking here on the forum for a while, but now I finally registered here. I recently bought a cheap straight razor just to see if I would like it. Unfortunately, since I bought it from new, it's not sharp enough. I've tried to strop it but it still hurts like hell when I try to shave with it.

I've seen that a lot of people here send their razor to other members to get it honed, but I haven't been able to find out which members. I live in Denmark, so who should I contact to get my razor honed? And what will it cost me?

MMMM tough one, could you elaborate on what you mean by cheap? What kind of razor is it?

I would suggest you go to www.classicshaving.com and select the straight razor sharpening button. It is cheap but well worth it. jmsbcknr;)

Look in the phone book for a barber supply place. They can either get your razor sharpened well or can send you to someone who can. Do NOT give it to someone who has no experience with str8s, i.e. a knife shop.

I bought it on ebay from England, it says Rockwell Solingen on the blade and on the strop it came with, so I doubt it's from Pakistan :hmmm:

I got the impression that some of the more skilled members here were willing to hone it for a fee, that's why I asked.

Not 100% sure, but I think you may have bought a Paki razor. Do a search on ROCKWELL on this site as well as the SRP group at yahoo.com. I hope for your sake I'm wrong. On a lighter note, welcome to the fold! You should have no trouble getting the help you need, the group of guys here are the best. If you DID inadvertently end up with a Pakistani Special, that could make things easier. Buy a shave-ready razor from one of the honemeisters and you'll be set. If it says Rockwell Solingen I AM 100% sure it is a Pakistani made razor. The UK guy is the importer for these and distributes them to other dealers like the Canadian guy which advertises them as being made in Germany.
A web search shows Rockwell Solingen is nothing more than a tradename registered in the UK to the same guy that sells these on eBay.

I have sen the razors, e-mailed with the trademark holder, etc.... when asked he was very straightforward about their origin. The Canadian dealer is not.

Get another razor already sharpened by a member here. There are used, shave ready sharp razors in the Gallery sections from mebers as well as newly honed ones from me. If you want higher end stuff John Crowley has some really top notch razors too. Classic Shaving has lots to choose from as well and for an additional feee will have them sharpened.

Dammit. Well, I guess I need a new razor then, but my budget is pretty limited unfortunately. Thanks for the help, I should've found this site earlier :(

For an inexpensive used , vintage, quality, shave ready razor look on this site in the users gallery> Lynn or David Uthe or Andrews folder. Also check out the gear for sale folder. An other excellent source is www.billysblades.com.
In all cases make sure the razor is honed.
Also look in the classifieds here and at straightedgerazors.com
