why didnt anyone tell me that honeing could be this relaxing

well, i ordered and recieved my third and final naniwa today, (final being a very very subjective word at this point, there could be others ordered later on.)and i sat down at the island in the kitchen and went to work on a practice razor i picked up the other day, a joseph elliot apollo razor, and i do believe it honed up well, will be shave testing it in 2 days, so i will let all know how it went. but i must admit, it is very relaxing to sit down and hone away, just wish my other razors were ready, but they will be soon.

I find honing to be incredibly relaxing as well. It's a simple pleasure :)

paul, kinda takes me to a zen place, almost sit there and start to chant, lolol, seriously, it is very relaxing, now it i could just get my kids to stop trying to interupt me when i am doing it all would be right with the world.

Heh. It's only recently become relaxing for me.
By some sort of miracle I managed to get a razor to shave-ready on one of my first attempts.

Then... It took me a long time to get another razor to shave ready. I was ready to throw my stones out the window on several occasions. But... For some reason I just kept trying. I have just gotten to a point now where I can be pretty confident when I sit down with a razor that I can bring it to a shaving edge. I still have some that give me trouble, but my success rate has gone from "I can't do this at all" to "I can get there well over 50% of the time." That has made it a lot more fun.

Just a note to anyone else that's new at this... I had to get some mentoring and some affirmation from people that not everyone gets the hang of this right away. There are a lot of threads posted about somebody getting a wonderful edge on their first try. For reasons unknown there aren't that many threads posted about people that are just having a heck of a time getting the hang of it.
If you're one of those people, like me, hang in there. You will get it eventually.

I find honing to be incredibly relaxing. But my wife says the sound of the razor on the hone (a sound that I can't hear) is, to her, like finger nails being scraped down a back board.

I find that working on razors is a very relaxing experience too. I get into a project cleaning, polishing and general maintenance and I'm as happy as a clam. As soon as I'm done the RAD starts kicking in again.
