I previously always lapped with DMT 325 then 1200 in the sink. I thought I would try sandpaper. I got good quality 400 and 600 and used both also in the sink on a slab of smooth granite. I seem to get a far better result with sandpaper. I would be interested in other members' views.
Do you mean wet or dry paper (silicon carbide) or actual sand-paper?
In the UK woodworker's glass-paper is commonly referred to as sand-paper.
Glasspaper the same smooth stuff that panelbeaters use.

A good question. To the OP, it is now a known fact that using a DMT 1200 for lapping waterstones will ruin the plate sooner than later. How soon depends on what and how much you're lapping with it. Could that account for your lesser results with the diamond plates ?Quote:

I've always used a DMT8C or DMT8XC on my Shapton Glasstones. If by "better results" you mean a smoother surface that can be fixed. It's late, and shaptons are kinda different so my experience won't be much help unless thats what you're using.
I like the DMT.
...and to what JimmyHad...Yep, my DMT8C is needs replacing...and it's been less than a year. ("Diamonds Last Forever", :soapbox:)

Currently I use 400/600 grit silicon carbide paper with my Nortons & Naniwas.
This is mainly because I can't get a suitable DMT plate in the UK :(;
I am going to order one from SRD :)

The stones are all Naniwa 1 - 12K. the 'better' result is that the sandpaper seems to give a slightly smoother finish.

Ditto to the above, the DMT 325 has served me very well and residual grit that may/would be an issue with paper isn't a question. Paper does have it's place, I like it attached to glass plates in progressive fine grits for my wood chisels...as they say...scary sharp is possible on these heavier tools!
I use a brick sized natural stone I found in the outskirts of Bangkok. Thais use these stones for sharpening knives. It's the same type of stone they use for making mortar and pestle. This stone is a high grit and is extremely hard. I flattened this stone on sheets of wet n dry paper over a number of days and now I use this to lap all my hones including Naniwa, sharpton, and king hones. The beauty of this is that it is so convenient to use and an easy way to ensure that my hones stay flat and clean. It's made a huge difference in my honing.
