LAPPING QUESTION?
To avoid cross contanimation or flattening of wrong stone what would be the best grit and type of sandpaper to lap 800, 4000, 8000, Nortons &
Chipaway barber hone. These would of course be backed by a hard flat surface. Thank you for any and all advise.

320 wet/dry sandpaper , rinse well before you move to the next stone.

i use sandpaper glued on a piece of glass. For rough stones less than 1K i use about 220 - 300 grit paper. For 1K - 4K stones i use 400 - 600 grit papers, and for finer stones the paper is 800. Just remember to keep the paper wet. Works ok at least with me.

Another trick is to always lap the finest stones first, that way
you don't end up with coarser particles embedded in the fine
hones. I do this each time I lap my set of Shaptons (before a
honing session).
