when i purchased my naniwas, i purchased the 220grit lapping block with it, and i am wondering, i do have some 400 grit sandpaper, but can i use the lapping block on my escher, or will i be better off with the sandpaper.

If I had those options I would do the pencil grid and start with the 220. Once it was flat I would try a razor and if it felt good I would leave well enough alone. If it felt coarse I would draw another grid and use the paper on the plate to make sure it is flat. I do it in the kitchen sink under running water. I use the 325 plate on my Escher and I don't lap them very often. Nothing like with my synthetics. With the 325 the razor feels good on the hone.
thanks jimmy, i will admit i dont lap the escher very often, at least not like the nani's, they get lapped before each session, the escher feels pretty flat still and i lapped her before the last session, so i think i am good so far, but i felt it was still a question that needed asking, before i truely mess things up
Same here. I lap the naniwas before a session. The naturals don't change the way some synthetics do and a finisher isn't getting a lot of wear so I don't lap those but once in a blue moon. I hate to see any of my Escher going down the drain. :)
i love mine, i just wish i had a one that was wider and longer, would make finishing a little easier, but you work with what you got, till you can get another
I have to agree with you guys except on one point....when I lap my hones I always finish with a 1000 grit. The texture it leaves agrees with me more. All it amounts to is personal choice. I found it beneficial to be consistent, by doing so it gives me a better sense of when I need to "refresh" the surface of the hone.
Just my $.02,:)
this will sound not right i never lap my escher.just dont wanna waste any of it.
If you're Escher is small it shouldn't need all that lapping like the Naniwa does. I lap my naniwas before or after using them also but that's a totally different subject.
