spect, to reply to your post, i walk away frequently, i have to give my hand a rest, if only because after having carpal tunnel release surgery a few years back, my wrists are starting to get sore again, not that i would tell the misses, she would just worry. and kevin, i dont want to diminish you post, but i will have to reread what you posted, i am tired, and i cant just wrap my head around it right now

What hones do you use to get the edge sharp? If you dull on glass, which is fine, I would just go to a 1k stone and use x stokes and half moons along with circles. This should set a bevel in a few minutes and can shave arm hair. After that I go to my norton and use the 4k until I can pop arm hair mid length, I move up only after that and I've had no issues. I hope this helps.

I tried this on one razor that I honed, but it didnt really make much difference apart from making it take a bit longer to get the bevel set. Instead of going from nearly dull to set, I had to go from totally dull to set.
I agree with Dylan. Move forward with the sharpening, not backwards..! :)
