One hone that is. At this time im looking for one hone under 100.00 to maintain a great edge when needed. Im not going to need this to bring back a bad edge, just to keep a good one when needed. I am going to send out my straights to get a pro hone from one of the pros on here, but I will need a stone to keep it sharp in the long run. Please post what you would get, and why. Thanks in advance.

For 100 bucks? A Barber's hone and a Norton 4/8k combo....
Barber hones are the luck of the draw...
The best earn a solid yes. But you cannot audition them on Ebay.
Given the less than $100 budget the classic good
answer is a Norton 4/8K combo hone and some sheets
of wet dry to lap it on a counter top or granite tile.
Perhaps there is a new contender.
Lately I am enamored of the SS12K hone.
Naniwa Super Stone 12,000 (or 10,000) sits
high on my list because a razor that was sharp
last fortnight only needs to visit the Super Stone
for a small number of laps to be good to go again.
I have been trying this on the last couple weeks so I
am still holding my opinion but the early returns are
taking me to a single fine grit Super Stone as a refresh
hone.
Lapping is important for both the Norton and the SS.
But a flat granite tile and a package of wet dry paper
under running water seems to cover that base for a lot
less than a DMT which would bust the given budget.
Under $100... Norton 4/8k combi stone...
No way in hell I'm going back to one hone, THEY'RE ALL MINE... MINE I TELL YOU!!!!
Under $100? Barber hone or Coticule. Or maybe one of the high grit Naniwas, like 10k or 12k.
The Norton 4/8k is really all I need.
My Chinese Guangxi polishing hone and
Osaki natural Japanese finishing hone
are just "frosting on the honing cake". :)
My vote would be for 2 abrasive pasted paddle strops. A 1.0 micron diamond on one and a 0.5 micron ChromeOx on the other. Keep them separate and covered. Use only when the shave starts to pull a bit.
A Barber hone is not as fine a grit and the hone needs to be prepped properly but it is a good tool to have.

A natural BBW/coti combo, narrow width. Ideally, Coti side would be hard.
Depends. If I actually wanted to hone razors, it would be a norton 4K/8K.
If I just wanted to maintain a razor after it was honed, I'd buy a pasted paddle strop.
For touch ups I seem to drift from pasted paddles to coticules to man-made hones. I have one old 6" x 2" coticule natural combo that seems to be like that old childhood blanket - it's something I always return to as it just seems to do the trick. I've made my own paddles and annointed them with the Theirs Issard paste, the stuff that seems to go on like bubble gum, on leather - and chromium oxide on balsa wood or leather. It seems that mileages vary by driver, so what works for one may or may not work all that swell for another, but those coticules are hard to beat and making paddles for oneself cuts the cost down.

A good Japanese natural, your only buying one hone get the best and yes it just may cost more than 100 bucks
A belgian combo hone is what I keep in my medicine chest in the bathroom to maintain sharpness. I give the blade a few licks every week on the yellow coticule side but sometimes I get lazy and it gets duller than I like so I turn the hone over and use the blue side and then the yellow side. I'm happy with the system and love the feel of the natural stone.
If I had to head for the hills and could only take one hone with me, that would be it.
+1, knowing what I know now after many, many hones my vote goes to the 4/8 and the SRD modular paddle.Quote:

I could get on going with either coti, barber hone or c12k. Hard to say what is the best on this task. All are ok. With coti or chinese i could do more than just touch-up. Barber hone is ok with touch-up, but not much more.
This sounds like what im leaning toward, but I have been unable to locate one in my price range. Any idea of where I could get one? If I cant find one, then im going to go with the single yellow coticule as the second choice, and the Naniwa as my third.Quote:
