I need a 3x8" stone in the ballpark of 2000 grit. Norton skips from 1k to 4k as far as I can tell. Any others you guys recommend? How about that Spyderco UF hone? I hear it's about 2k, but can it be used wet? It's probably not very wide either. I need it more for setting bevels than anything else, so I need a good spot to do circles on.

The 1000 grit is measured using the american standard. The 4000 grit is measured using the japanese standard. Actually the size of the 4000 grit is approx 1/2 that of the 1000 so its not the big jump that you think. In short, you do not need a another 2000 grit stone, you already have one, the 4000.

OK I see what you mean Randy but I want something faster than the 4k. The next thing down I have is the UF DMT Duosharp and I think that's too aggressive for all but the worst cases. That thing will chip out edges if not very careful. I have no experience with the Norton 1k, but as the DMT is supposedly 1200 I thought the 1k would be even rougher....? I suppose I can make do with the gap between the DMT and the 4k, I just thought if there was a favorite stone in between there....

Using the DMT UF followed by the Norton 4K seems like a perfect solution to me. I often go straight from the DMT to my coarser barber hones.
I've had a Norton 220/1K for only a short while, but honestly wish I had bought it much sooner. I dearly love the 1K for creating bevels and have even used the 220 a couple of times for taking out nicks. I've not found the jump from the 1K to the 4K to be excessive.

Or putting it another way, the 1000 is the 2K he's looking for. I find that the diamond ultrafine is perfect for geting that edge started quickly.Quote:
