Its common but not as effective. The further you work your way up the more your trying to smooth and refine. At the higher grits its usually better to go slow and focus on strict form.
When honing, always think "weakest link in the chain". If you mix grits, your honing effects will be that of the lowest grit you're using. The real beneit of the pyramid, in my opinion, is that it forces hone progression, not that it gets a better edge.
Interesting question. I find that on a razor that needs touching up, I may go from the Norton 8K side for 3-5 strokes followed by around 10 strokes on the Coticule. Sometimes I may just go to the Coticule. It would be interesting on sharpening a new one to see if a couple trips from the Norton to the Coticule makes any difference.

Those are my feelings too. If I'm touching up I'll usually just use the coticule about 30 strokes. Sometimes I'll use the Norton 8K a few strokes and then a lesser amount on the yellow (about 20). I think on most of my new razors I've done about 10 strokes on the 8K followed by between 20 -60 strokes on the yellow depending on how shave ready the razor is.Quote:

Interesting question. I believe that someone else is doing that and likes the results. Just be sure to test often to avoid overhoning.
well i tried re honing, finishing with 3 sets of 1/5 on norton 8k to Jap.12k shaved very good. need to see how long edge holds up.
I'm having trouble sticking to the higher grits alone. It's too easy for me to over smooth the edge athat way. A little 4k goes a long way helping me avoid that.
