Just bring the upper half of the razor to the stone, do the circular motion, than work the bottom half, lokalizing the pressure there... Don't grind the edge at 90 degrees, there is no need for that, and it's a helluva work to bring it to right bevel afterwards. Also, if the spine is slightly curved (smiled), you want the same smile on the edge too...

Ok that makes sense, just place the toe on the razor and have the heel hang off then have just the heel on the razor until it's about even. thanks.

You will find that the method suggested by Papabull works the fastest. Also follow Joe Lerch suggestion on taping the spine.
That is what I do and it always works.
