What make of razor is it???
A lot of the razors on the do not buy list are advertised as 440 or 440c stainless. As Lynn said, knowing the brand is important here.
Even the best SS razors I have tried left me feeling like I wanted a better shave. Get a good quality carbon blade of known quality to have a good standard set as to what st8 shaving is all about or you will never know what the excitement is all about.
My experience is different to Kingfish. I like how Stainless Friodurs shave even Stainless Dovos. Hopefully you didn't buy a cheap n nasty.
I don't know anything about steel, I'm just saying what I've seen the DNB razors advertised as.
There is 440a, 440b and 440c that I know of and I wouldn't want a or b. I used to know the differences between them, but it's been a while since I've done anything with knife making and steel. I believe that a and b are softer alloys.

Chopkins,
My Dovo EnVogue (Micarta) stainless blade behaves very well with my usual Naniwa 3, 8, 12 k progression :)
Have fun !
Best regards
