Substitute for honing oil?

Can gun oil be used as a substitute for honing oil?
How about mineral oil? Light machine oil?
Any other suggestions?

Yes you can use mineral oil etc but just be careful in which stone you are using oil
Try to not mix up water hones with oil.

The biggest rule to follow with honing oils is that they are non drying oils. Even some oils like camellia oil wil dry over months, clogging stone with natural forming polymers.
Thicker oils diluted with thinners that get sticky can always be washed off with soapy water and scrub brush to start.
Keeping oil stones sealed after use retard tevaporation and dust contamination.
Synthetic petroleum products serve the best. Think about this Petro=Rock
and Oleum=Oil. The natural order of our world.

Many thanks, gentlemen. Yes, I have 2 stones that I've
always oiled...never watered. I've run out of honing oil,
and I won't be getting a re-supply for a month, so I'll
have to use a substitute until then.

i have found that the lighter the oil the better it works i ues lamp oil and it works just fine when through honing i just wipe it off with a dry rag .
