Skype Session with Randy Tuttle

I just had a video Skype session with Randy and it was one of the most valuable things a SR-newbie can ever get the pleasure of witnessing. He patiently waited as I gathered the materials needed to accompany my first proper honing session and went with me through all the laps and handling procedures right up until the hanging hair test.

As an SR-newbie myself, and after all the materials I've read, I found that I learned best when I see Randy's webcam and have my questions answered directly on the spot. I don't feel paranoid anymore about honing.

Thank you. It is really interesting to do this. I hope people realize that Lynn Abrams will also help people out in the same manner ( video honing sessions ). My goal in doing this is to shorten the learning curve that most of us have gone thru.
It really is a fast and easy way to learn honing.

What an interesting thought. A video chat sounds like a great way to learn. What computer set up do you use?

I am about to have my session with Randy, and I am looking forward to it. There are some small but significant points to remember.

Skype 2.0 or grater must be installed and working with your web cam.
You have to be using Windows XP, I normally use Linux but Skype for Linux does not have video conf facilities, nor does Skype for Mac.

Other than that you are away with Skype video conf for free.

I had never used Skype before today and I am converted.

Windows XP, a webcam and a microphone. You also need to go to Skype.com and download and install their software. You may need to play with the software a bit to get the settings correct for the microphone. Skype has a good setup/debugging software module.

Yes Skype does work for Mac you can down load it from www.skype.com, not sure to much about versions.

But the Video Conf part is XP only :mad: .

I have just had my session with Randy, and I can tell you a very enlightening time. Randy is not well at the moment but that did not stop him,

I have just learned so much, it is very nice to be able to see another person's honing technique. You alway wander if what you are doing is what is meant by the person who writes down how to perform an an act.

What impressed me the most was seeing the edge being formed under my microscope and realising when an edge is over honed and seeing how to recover from that position.

So all in all a valuable lesson and the live feed back is fantastic.

I would recommend this as a valuable way forward.

Unfortunately I could not see a way of recording the session easily, but it is more about interacting with someone how knows what they are doing.

I am now trying to get my camcorder to work as a webcam.
Lynns video's should be coming out soon.

Skype will work without you having a webcam or a mic. There is a chat functionality. So, you can see my webcam even if you do not have one and if your speakers are turned on then you can hear my voice. The real magic is in the two way feedback, interaction, in real time, provided by the microphone and the webcam.
If you don't have a webcam or mic I would be willing to try and we can see if it works ok.

What you would need is to have Skype loaded on your computer. And that is free.

Randy is right. We have talked about this for a while and it is a great idea. As Randy indicated, I will be most happy to spend some time with you guys and see if I can help with honing or stropping for that matter. I am on Yahoo Messenger and I think on Skype. Need to find my skype name, but I think it's adjustme69.....lol. Good stuff Randy. Lynn

On top of that, Nenad came up with an interesting idea. How about just recording a small vid on proper honing with various stones? That should steepen the learning curve :)
