I wear a goatee, so I use an actual beard hair to conduct HHTs. I figure it's the only test (other than an actual shave test) that's completely accurate. I pull a beard hair with a tweezer and test it on a razor. Done. If it passes that test, the bevel is set.
I do, however, also rely on the magic marker test. It determines whether the metal has been removed, and relies upon a good stroke.

i will hone on 1k untill the tnt responds. this is when i will test on arm hair etc, not untill i'm passing tnt real well. i then hone on coticule till the end strop and shave . i will try hht after stropping this gives me a good indication of shave readiness, if i pass and my source of hair .
