In all likelihood, most people have more natural talent - take to honing more easily than I. In 10 days w/ the coti, 2-3 blades honed/day (and the test shaves). I got 2 passable edges. Neither would be in the same universe as another stone I use & love. On the evening of the 10th day (that would be 30 blades), it clicked. Edges were now in the ballpark of my pet rock, and very respectable.
I'm not saying there aren't rocks other than your coti, but ask the pros about how many blades it takes to get to know a natural rock. You can drop alot of money on stones with the 4 blade approach. Take your time. Pay your dues in labor to get to know the rocks. Ask questions, get gracious answers from guys that are down the road a bit. Yes, the learning can be a bugger. You'll be glad you did the work. You'll have more arrows in your quiver (techniques) for each rock you master. If your doctor told you that you have too much money, there are many place that can help.
