Lapping - Honing - Its all done at the same place for me. The kitchen counter.
It was built for honing, well actually polishing Japanese swords. Adapted quite well and yes, the cubbies are great for the stones. It's tilted to drain the slurry to a coffee can on the other side that's in a cubby hole.
Here's my current work area set up for honing. It doubles as my shave den too. I usually only sit if I'm working on bevel sets. For the final finishers I hand hold em. It's faster. see SOTD for the Japanese Western tweaked this morn.
