I agree with you. This wasn't a "normal" razor. Long story short I should have taken it to a belt sander. After this project one is at the top of my wish list. I was working on a pattern welded blade that I got as a hardened/heat treated blank. I finished it hand sanding and left the edge to thick and the blade to wide for the spine. I etched it and started to hone. I figured it was wide and used 3 pieces of tape at first. The bevel got pretty wide and I went to 5 pieces of tape. The included angle is much better. I have a servicable edge on it now and stopped for the time being. What I should do in the future is butternife the edge back at least 3/16 inch and start over. I am not going to do that without a sander! If I got $1.00 an hour for the time in this project I could probably afford one. All in all it has been a frustrating yet enjoyable learning experience. I also did my first domed washers on this one but that is another story.
