Having a fun time with a Dorko 7 day set

First off, an entire weeks worth of work on these, getting them restored for our very own mbaglio here at SRP
As I told Michael I truly believe that 90% of the problems on these razors were caused by the fact that when they left the factory, they did so without bearing washers...
This caused some extra stress with the center pin spacer, which in turn helped with the warping that occurred, then I really believe that the minor rusting that was on the tangs would not have been that bad if they had not been resting right against the scales...
Needless to say we polished the blades and straightened all the scales, popped and replaced all 21 pins so they all match again :) I even took so time to re-glue the box nice and tight...

So now why is this in the Honing section instead of the Workshop ????

Well good question, so let Michael and I explain :)

Instead of having me hone all of these identically, which is the norm, I am going to hone each one different....

We will have

Naniwa SS 12k
Shapton GS 30k
Select Coticule
Blue/Green Escher
Nakayama Midori
Thuringen
PHIG

Of course I will have the key as to which is honed on what stone and Michael will just be doing some test shaving...

Keep in mind this doesn't prove anything other than we like to have a bit of fun on SRP, some people tend to put a wee bit to much weight into these...

Beautiful set. Interesting test for the end user too. I have one of those Starratt hammers with the magnifying glass built in. Great for making sure I'm using the correct drill bit or tap. :)

I'm starting a petition to get you to repost this in the workshop forum so's you can 'splain how your most useful tool in straightening the scales was made by... :roflmao REVLON. :roflmao

This was just to rare an opportunity to pass up. :) I had to fight off the voice in my head- (you know, the one with the heavy Scots brogue)- who's been yelling:

"Nae, DON'T DO IT Laddie! That way be dragons, 'n ye canna' return from the depths of the aah-beeeesss!!!"

So, I'm kinda hoping I like the PHIG best. I have of those, and I'd hate to have to start lurking in the rockhounds forum to feed some new addiction... (But I s'pose I better start being really nice to Jimmy just in case...) :D

I love these blind honing experiments.... so much in fact that I'm the new owner or RayG's 4 day Mappin set that Glen worked on last year (not to mention the fact that I always wanted a M & W) :tu

I love the set, the scales are great looking, and the experiment is a great idea. I tried the same thing with two identical razors honed by Dylan needless to say with 50% chance I still was wrong guessing which razor was honed by which stone so the owner has quite a challenge ahead of himself. It's also great because it helps relieve the boredom of identical razors as it gives them a slightly different feeling.

Whoops That's right you do have one of those and you know how to use it, I shaved the one you sent all honed up with it :)

Exact progressions for the Honing junkies :)

7 Razors:
Bevel set on a Chosera 1k basically 20 circles each side then 20 laps so that they were popping arm hair easily..

5 Razors:
Honed on the 1-3-8 Henckels Hones (Naniwa SS by another name) then finished on the 5 different naturals listed above using mostly a light slurry and pig tail strokes then dilute to clear water, except the Nakayama which I take to an almost dry state...

1 Razor:
Naniwa SS 1-3-5-8-10-12 using the technique of 10 laps on light slurry and 10 laps to clear water as described in the Naniwa honing thread..

1 Razor:
Shapton GS 1-2-4-6-8-16-30 using the same style technique as the Naniwas and the 3-2-1 finish on the 30k

7 Razors:
Stropped 8 laps on a 24 in Leather bench strop, coated with 99% pure CeOx powder mixed with Fromm strop conditioner...

7 Razors:
Stropped 50/100 Illinois #827, test shaved... re-stropped 25/50 SRD Premium #1, oiled and then sent to Michael...

8 laps on the CeOx strop? Doesn't that wash away the characteristics of the finishing hones a bit? Or it doesn't matter that much as I think? :)

Funny how those 8 laps caught yer eye, but the 225 laps on linen and leather plus a test shave did not :) I actually find that most interesting...

You have a point Glen :) It is possible that the linen and leather laps and a test shave changes the edge more than the 8 laps on the paste. I am not used to shaving right off the stones without stropping, and I test shave every blade before giving it back, so I think it is so natural for me that I didn't even think about it.

A seven day set like this is rare enough
and then a honemaster like Glen is also
rare... Then to have seven unique finishing
hones... you are a lucky man.

Next you need to send razors out to other
honemasters and then send them to me
for the shave test. As important a test
as this is to do, you are aware that seven
well honed razors should shave well for
more than six months perhaps a year and
to give an honest evaluation the full
time would be needed.

The Dorkos arrived yesterday! I'll be posting a new thread shortly soliciting input on the best procedure to test these out.

[Translation: I feel like I'm about to rate 7 different kinds of caviar after a lifetime of eating Vienna Sausage straight out of the can.]
