Okay, here's another dumb newbie question. It's probably been addressed but I couldn't find any specific reference. When, or under what conditions or circumstances, would you use CrOx instead of a finer water stone? Is it just a matter of preference or is it more than that?

For all practical purposes, there is no finer water stone. The grit of most CrOx used for razors will be more fine than any hone. You can use the CrOx as the first line of defense against a dulling razor. If it fails to bring it to the appropriate sharpness, only then drop down to a fine hone and then follow that with CrOx stropping if you wish.
We usually don't use Chro2 for sharpening purposes. it will just polish the edge. Very very weak cutting power.
Depends what type water stone are you talking about. some water stones are very low grit lets say 3-4 k level and there is no reason to use chro2 after that stones.
Usually you will use after you finish your honing . After your finest stone app after 8k level you can use chro2.

Nun2sharp,or Modine or anyone else in the area can guide you about honing or keeping your blade shave ready. Try contact them and see which one will have more free time.

Sham, I have had the pleasure of sitting down with Kelly (Nun2Sharp) and he was extremely helpful. I feel very comfortable working with him and he does good work on top of that! I just don't want to bug him with occasional questions like these -- that's what the forum's for in my view. Plus, I'll bet somebody else had the same question and he can see it addressed here. Kelly and I will get together before long and visit again. I believe you helped get him started, didn't you?

CrOxide usually has 0.5 micron particles. That's _roughly_ equivalent to 35,000 grit.
You use CrOxide when you've finished honing on the finest stone you have. It leaves a mirror polish (under a 10x loupe) to the bevel.

You can not compare micron to any grit rating system. If you want to know more about it, you might want to read here.
Feel free to ask if anything is unclear.
Bottom line: 0.5 micron Cr2O3 is not equivalent to any stone. But you can definitely say it can give an edge as smooth as possible.
