On the rough whetstone, and/or on say a DMT 220, I have to reset the bevel shape. At times, I will apply tape and reset the bevel. The tape protects the spine from being honed excessively.
After the bevel shape is reset, I remove the tape and again hone on the DMT 220. No taping thereafter.
