I dropped my 'Shapton on tempered glass' stone on my kitchen tiles!

I am not happy!

I was honing a new razor i received today, i just finished setting the bevel with my 1k shapton glass stone, went to put it aside and..... CRACK! i dropped it on the kitchen tiles!

I attempted to save it with my foot but that just ended up hurting my foot and kicking the stone a little further.

At first i didn't think there was any damage and there was a sigh of relief, then i noticed a small chip on the edge so i got out my diamond stone and rounded the edge... This would be when i noticed the slurry running in to a crack, forming a black line through the stone where it cracked..

GRRR! :(

Is it time to give up yet? I ordered my new stone so i guess not but man am i mad at my self! If anyone else had of dropped my stone i probably wouldn't have cared as much but i feel like an idiot doing it myself!

Ah well, it will still be ok for my kitchen knives...

Sorry to hear this... but it happens and well ... what can you say.

At least you didnt drop the razor and catch it with your foot! How bad is the crack? Sometimes you can just lap them flat and no harm done.

It sounds like you lost your tempered because of some slurry running into your glass crack.


Awhile back someone wanted to cut some shaptons in half to make narrower hones. They cracked like crazy.
IIRC the person mounted them on another piece of glass and they continued to perform ok after lapping.

Maybe that would work.

Sorry to hear this. just thank yourself that nobody got hurt in this 'accident'. Hope you can lap out the serious damage.

I was feeling sorta lucky when i only saw the chip, the crack is what annoyed me!

I can feel the crack with my finger but I could probably still use it with some lapping and the crack is close to the edge but.... I needed some OCD spending to make me feel better.

Note to self: Don't hone in the kitchen....

I guess i'm lucky that it was only the 1k as they aren't too expensive, it could have been much worse. If i doped a 30k or had have cracked a kitchen tile or dropped the razor on my foot like nun2sharp said i think i would have been much more upset then how I'm feeling now...

Edit: maybe i cant Lapp it, the piece moves slightly. The glue they use must be slightly rubbery..

Bad luck Brighty. I have mats down on my kitchen floor & a big rubber mat in my garage work area but razors or stones can still find their way to a hard surface. Which way does the crack run ? I mean if you use an x stroke you only need half a shapton to hone on.

The crack did run diagonally. It runs all the way through the stone now, i wasn't expecting to beadle to cut it but i gave it a go anyway... wow, HNSB, these stones really don't cut do they!

If it had have cut i would have been left with 2/3 of the stone.. now i have none

Why did they have to use tempered glass, why not normal glass!

Unfortunately yours didn't turn out as well as Chris'.

At least it's replaceable. Will the glass separate ? Can you maybe glue the stone to another piece ?

I have tried, every time i chip the glass off a piece of the stone breaks too

Glue the back to a new base with epoxy resin. that should keep the glass from detaching.

Because if you dropped it, it would shatter as well. Only not into nice and relatively dull tempered pellets, but into wicked sharp nasty pieces of glass.

It must be a 'Chris' thing to try and cut shapton stones.

I can imagine how it went:

1.) Hand slipping from the stone, momentarily lifting the forcefull grip of brighty the mighty
2.) Stone falling, accelerating at a staggering rate
3.) At the peak of acceleration the impact seems inevitable
4.) Brighty thinking: "come on gravity, you used to be cool" trying to prevent the worst
5.) Shaptons masterpiece shattering into pieces
6.) Brighty shaking one single angry fist thinking "damn you, Isaac Newton for inventing the gravity!"

When the new Shapton 1k arrives, simply close this chapter and shuffle on down to the rubber mat store.

I did the same ages back and dropped my 8k in the sink while I was lapping it... The Shaptons are awesome stones buy they don't like to be dropped.

All you can really do if it's totally nadgered is bin it and get a new one. Annoying but unfortunately that's about all you can do if it's not salvageable.

Ditto this. I would do this with any glasstone, anyway. Thicker stones are always nicer to use. If you start with a glasstone, gluing it to a piece of quartersawn wood, or another (scuffed) thicker piece of cut glass with epoxy makes it a lot nicer to use.

Another reason they may have chosen tempered is because tempered glass is heat treated and is stronger. The tempered glass will withstand more jolts than annealed glass and thus is better suited for people like us who move them around a lot, setting them down hard and also applying pressure to it even if it's for wood working tools.

When I first started working in the glass industry (many years ago and eventually left it) I got a chance to see just how strong tempered is. I had a door glass from a Chevy (it was sandblasted from a sand storm) and used a center punch in the middle 5x and it never broke. Yet when I took a coat hanger and swatted the edge like I was using a fly swatter it shattered. FYI for all of you, the edge of tempered glass is the weak spot. Now, when I tried the same method on annealed the first pop from the punch busted the glass yet the coat hanger on the edge merely chipped it and started runs.

Given the expense of the Shapton 1k I would have just tossed it and got a new one however, it never hurts to try what you did and this now stands as an example of what could happen. Just be thankful this Shapton you broke wasn't the 30k.

I would say i have a very broad range of stones now and i prefer my glass stones the most so far. They sit nicely in you hand if you want to have a go at 'traditional' honing and with a holder they sit higher then my standard stones. i generally just use them on a rubber mat.

Each to there own though, we all have our own preferences!

Mine have to do double duty (woodworking and razors, knives too, I guess and anything else that could benefit from a stone), so my opinions are clouded a little bit.

I've not seen the glasstones as anything other than a way to get people to pay full price for 1/3rd of a stone, or actually more than they charge for a pro stone in japan. The exception being maybe the 30k stone, but there are so many ways to get a uniform 1/2 micron cut that don't cost $300.

Far and away, of all of my stones (50?) the shapton pros get used the most, but I would have to guess that the arrangement that brings them into the US makes them out to be something better than they are. E.g., the cream shapton can be gotten in japan for $85. Somehow, here, the equivalent stone is about $140 (??) and a glasstone costs more than a pro stone does.

Shaptons argument that you can't use the whole pro stone is goofery, any user can glue it to glass if they want to do the same thing, or in my case, wood, and use the entire depth of the stone.

I would probably not mind the way the glasstones are presented as much if I only used them for razors, but they are spent too quickly as woodworking stones, especially the coarser stones (1000, and coarser than that are difficult to use because of loading, anyway).

There is a sigma power stone that I am itching to try, but I have to come up with a good reason to spend the money. It is supposedly similar in fineness to a 30k shapton (which I have used a fair bit) for about $135, and with a better all around feel. I'd like to see how it measures up to the 10k chosera, too, which is a very nice woodworking stone, but pricey in any comparison that doesn't involve shapton 30k stones or japanese natural stones.

Apologies for the burst of cynicism, I just have not been that satisfied with the glasstones, especially when it comes to cutting some of the newer tool steels.

At least it wasn't a 30k. If I dropped my 30k I would buy a cheap pocket knife and go back to a carbo rock...
