thought the bevel was set

the razor i have been working on is an old solid wedge, to give you a bit more info, the spine measurs 1/4 of an inch thick. I have been working on setting the bevel, and i was sure i had it earlier, due to the fact that it would pop hairs off my arm, or what i saw. so i move up to the 5k. now here is where it went left on me, i slowly and gently worked a rolling x-pattern, and i figure i have made about 50 or so passes, i went to check my progress, on my arm, and now it wont pop hairs like it was. so i guess my question is can you lose the bevel by moving to quickly up on the stones, or was it a situation of the bevel not being set to begin with.

Sounds like you're working a wedge. You may have just smoothed out the teeth left by the 1k and haven't got to a clean 5k edge yet. I'm sure a real honer will be along shortly to give some better info.

Did it still pass the TNT? if it does, you still have the 1k bevel and edge, just haven't done all the work with the stage your on now. Other than that, I agree with Mick. Wedges suck to hone and I'll wait for someone who can hone them to weigh in

Because you said 5k this makes me think you are using the Naniwa SS, if this is true, that is not an un-common occurrence... The Naniwas can confuse you in the middle of the honing, as many of the more common sharpness tests will fail with many of us.. It took a few times for me to realize this when I first started using them, as I am one of those people... I get positive sharpness tests on the 1k, then lose them until the 12k when they reappear. You have to try it a few times to convince yourself of this being true :(

yes glen, i am on naniwa's. i will just have to keep trudging along slowly, and keep the faith. thanks for the insight into this matter. and tekboy, while honing the thing is a bear, i cant wait till its done, and i am shaving with a cleaver, and then i can go to the kitchen and cut up a chicken with it.

I quite often get that with Shapton Ceramic Pro stones as well.

Sounds indentical to what happens when an edge falls apart. I hope it is as Glen says and not a back to square one scenario.

Give it a try all the way through and trust in your TPT just so long as it keeps feeling just a touch sharper/ stickier each time just push on through until the shave test and see what happens...
You won't know for sure until you actually try it.. :(

It might be one or the other (failed bevel) as Kelly pointed out, but I re-set a few bevels before I figured this out :)

Are you taping the spine? That won't help with your current oddity, but it will with future honing of this big solid wedge. I've got a similar one I had to hone some dings out of, and by the time the dings were gone the spine was worn almost 1/4" wide. It looks so wrong.

UPDATE: spent another 6 hours here at work on that big b*&^ch, and i figured out that the bevel wasnt truely set, so back to the 1k, and it was atleast another 2 to three hours on that stone, going slowly, but i got it, worked it on the 5k, then slowly on the 8k, gave her i quick test to see if it was where i wanted it, then some laps on the escher, a little stropping when i get home and then the ultimate test, kinda unfair for it really, i will use it to shave my scalp, if it doesnt tug or pull there it never will.
