Title pretty much says it all. Does it take more pressure or a lot more strokes to hone a full wedge? As a side question, I read on one post that razors smaller than 5/8 can be more difficult to hone. Is this true and why?
I am trying to hone a 4/8 full wedge on a Norton 4K/8K, nothing I do seems to make it any sharper.
Honing small razors can be a task only because with say a 3/8s they are just harder to manipulate in the hand especially if you have large hands. As far as a wedge goes it's more a matter of having to remove more metal because of the usual size and that can take more time and often times some spine taping to alter the angle in honing which can speed things up a bit.
Yes and yes :) but in all honesty it is not the wedge style or the size that makes any difference , it is the "Previous Hone Wear" that determines the difficultly of honing...
A NOS 4/8 wedge will hone just as easily as a 4/8 full hollow, where the problems occur is that over the years the spine of the older wedge style razors wear quite heavily, and the amount of steel required to gain an edge changes exponentially more then it's full hollow counterpart...
PS: a "FULL" wedge is actually rather rare, most have at least a bit of grinding...might be a small bit but it is usually there
I think the speed of honing is more related with grind problems such as edge is not flat on the stone, uneven spine etc, than the fact that you hone a wedge.
