Hello,
Wondering if you guys see any reason this wouldn't work. Kinda a wedge/microtome type razor. Side "A" is concave, side "B" is a absolutely flat mirror. Honing would ONLY take place on the concave side (A), side (B) would be polished but no bevel kinda like a chisel. would this edge work? excuse the bad picture tried to make it easier to see what i'm saying.

I think that is basically how Japanese kamisori razors are.

I was wondering if i could get by with having a flat side with a nice mirror finish and only hone the concave side but I guess in order to make it shave ready you must set the bevel on both sides then. I looked at the threads about honing kamisoris but they also require both sides honed as you said. I can't think of a way to have absolutely flat side and avoid the honing of that side at the same time. Suppose you use two layers of tape on only the one side the side that's flat? Have you ever heard of only using tape on one side before?
A microtome is a one side hone...
We (SRP) don't hone it that way because we are discussing shaving, but for the actual use that a microtome is made for, which is slicing tissue then a one side hone and a one side leather stropping would work just fine...
This is the basic difference between every other type of sharpening, and Honing a Straight Razor, any other tool that you sharpen only has to be sharp, a straight razor needs to be smooth too...
When I hone a Microtome for shaving I use one layer of tape, this gives just enough lift (angle) to create a smooth shaving edge... BTW they are even more critical of angle and pressure when shaving than a true Kamisori is, also the edge is one of the most wickedly sharp edges I have ever tried...
No it will not, because you will be creating burr resulting in a painful shave (by most of the srp people's standard).Quote:
