i recently got a colombia river knife and trail knife ( first knife i ever got worth more than 20 bucks, its an assistaded open knife and its one step belo a switchblade) anyay i was wonderign if i could hone it on my barber hone i have other knife sharpeners but i think a barber hone would put a better edge on t and if i can would i want to trat the hone just like my knife stones in terms of how i sharpen the knife on it
can anyone tell me how the edge would turn
One of my barber hones is an old Swaty that is in poor condition, I use it to polish out my knives and last week used it on an axe while I watched TV. I bring the knives to arm hair cutting on my carborundums and polish out with the Swaty. The axe does not cut hair, I'm not that good. I do like the smoothness of my knife edges after the Swaty.
thanks mines a laudy barber hone made in here in pa i found it at in antique store in the back and got it for 10 $ works great on razors dident know how it would work on a pocket knife.
i think knives tend to be softer then razors, and if you are just putting the finishing touches on an already good edge i think a hard fine barber hone works well.. ive also got a two sided barber hone, where the coarser side is a bit softer, so i try not to dig into the stone when i use it, but it cuts a bit faster, and leaves a slightly toothier edge which actually seems to work better. give it a try.
Don't go nuts on it or you'll damage your barber hone. There is really no need to bring a knife up to the polish level that a barber hone will provide.
If you have a really great edge already into the thousands of grits, you could use the barber hone to put the finishing touches on it, but be sure to do it like a razor - not a lot of strokes, and a really light touch.
I think knives are tools. Each one requires different levels of sharpness. My like my skinning knives to be sharp enough to cut hair, but i have found over the years that if I sharpen my pocket knives to the same level i end up cutting myself more than what I am cutting. ... Pocket knives are made for using as a catch all knife... Unless of course your other job is an assassain ninja, then it makes sense to have a blade that is surgical sharp.
if you want to polish edges I guess yes you can ,but to sharpen as in reset bevels and/or repair edges , you will need lower grit stone to start with.
Just give it a try and see how it works.
I keep all my knives surgical sharp...Almost...I dream of being an assassin ninja too :). All jokes aside, I do keep my knives sharp to the extreme and I do it all up to no higher than 1000 grit. I carry a CRKT on me everyday (I own two) and I find that the steel used (in my two different models at least) is softer than many of my other knives.
I don't think you really need to go as far as using your barbers hone on a CRKT knife to achieve a great edge, but with a little care to protect your hone, I think it would be fine. If you can, invest in a Lansky sharpening system or something similar. 'Wicked edge' do a system that goes through quite a serious progression, right up to stropping stage I believe, it would probably be a better option.
I use a Lansky system, and I warn anyone who handles one of my knives for the first time to keep their fingers away from the edge. My friends all know, but even one of them still managed to cut something he shouldn't have, as the knife just cut straight through the coarse matting into the second layer with ease.

thanks guys i might get a wicked edge system or a lanskey system sometime, i have already used the under side ring on a coffe cup (cermic) to put a hair popping edge on knifes i like my knives to be scary sharp because i use them for alot of skinning and guttign and like clean cuts not hack jobs, i apperciate the input guys

Lansky Deluxe kit. I've added a Sapphire finishing stone to the standard five stones in the kit, as well as a fine serrated knife stone. I need to get the coarse serrated knife stone one day. I rarely use the blue sapphire stone, but it is a great polishing stone after the 1000 grit ceramic that's in the kit.
I've just finished doing three knives for a neighbour, just 10 minutes ago. They were in a shit state, looking more like knife shaped bits of steel bar, than knives. I had to breadknife two of them before I could put them to the stones. I did that on the bench belt sander with a fine belt, put a basic bevel profile back on using the sander, then went through the stone progression in a 3,2,1 order. Three swipes up and back on one side then the same for the other. Then two swipes up and back, flip and repeat, then one. Move down to the next stone and repeat, providing the bevel is properly re-set on the first stone. His knives came up with edges that were far better than they ever left the factory with. Despite the poor state they were in when he handed them to me.
Gatco is another brand that has a good system, and the thing with all these is that you clamp the blade in a jig guide and choose which angle will best suit the knife/job. Slide the guide rod into that slot, and with a little care on your part, the guess work is taken out of knife angles. Makes it a lot easier to get the job done. Gatco has a few extra angle choices offered, Lansky offer less angles but have a kit with one extra hone (not that you can't add to the Gatco) and wicked edge have a great system that is out of my price range, but seems to be the best one out there. Lansky and Gatco are half the price of a Wicked Edge, but if you can afford it, get the best you can find.

+1 on the Gatco. Use mine regular, even my boss has me sharpen his knives with it!! Great kit.
i looked and i think a lanskey delux is commign up soon. wicked edge is more than im willing to spend for a knife sharpener.
You won't regret the Lanskey Deluxe mate. That's the one I have and it puts a bloody great edge on all my, my friends and my families knives.

Sorry to go off topic a tad, but I realized I hadn't used my Guanxi Chinese 12k stone to sharpen a razor in more than a year. I figured I didn't want the thing to go to waste, so I tried a knife on it. It reminded me of an Arkansas stone in the way that you could really feel the cutting happen with some pressure bearing down on the blade. There was definitely some sharpening happening and the blade was mirror polished. From the few strokes I tried on it I think it's worth more looking into. Just thought I'd raise it up the flagpole if anyone was interested in putting their 12k to more use.
It would put a nice polish on a finished edge. I never gave it a thought myself, but I might have to try it now too.

thanks mick i have a good knife sharpener in mind now, just hope its up to keeping my arsonal of butcher knifes and skinning knives and pocket knifes sharp enough to be effective. maby once i get it ill finally sharpen my crackidile dondee knife.
I used my Lansky to sharpen my home made Dundee style bowie. I've put pictures of it up before, on other threads somewhere.

I use waterstones to sharpen knives going up to 6000 and usually put a microbevel on them. Then I use a pasted paddle strop and don't need to use the stones again on the knives unless they get dropped or severely battered. A paddle strop goes a long way and only takes seconds to get your edge hair popping sharp again without removing any steel.
Another cheap alternative would be an old Schrade Oldtime honesteel. They do remove metal but only require a few light licks like a chef's steel. They're hard to get in the UK but seem to be fairly easy to source in the States.
If you have a barber hone going spare it's free to use and will work I'm sure. They're hard to find over here, I don't even have one of them! Gutted. Oneday I will though...

Last time I sharpened all the cheaper kitchen knives I just did it by hand with a stone, I cut a little wooden wedge at 22.5 deg (approx) and just used that to periodically check my angle. It was a cheapo double sided oilstone and I got them nice and sharp in no time at all. So I am feeling a little miffed at my Lansky sharpener at the moment...

I use the lansky turnbox. I have the diamond sticks and medium and fine ceramics. Then hard felt with crox spray and then leather strop. My spyerco tenacious can whittle hairs from that set up. It also sliced my thumb yesterday too. Oops.
I used to use the bottom of ceramic coffee mug to sharpen pocket knives. It would put a nice edge on them

To hold a proper angle to me is what is hard freehand sharpening knifes. The Lansky or others take that out of the question. Razors have their own built in angle. :DQuote:
