I honed a razor to 8k. Stropped on plain leather then shaved with it. The blade is super sharp and smooth. Now I want to try finishing it on my La Verte Coticule 150x40.
Should I go back to 8k for a couple of strokes before going to the Coticule or just go straight to the coticle?
Should I be using slurry or just plain water on the coticle? Tips for how many laps?

If you are using coticule you can reset the edge right on it
If you want to compare how the edges feel off the different coticules, you need to go back to the 8k and reset the edge there.
I'd go back to 8k for say 10-15 laps just to be sure. As for the lap count on the coti I'd try 20-30 as it's a fairly small coti you got.

If your razor just lost its keenness and edge is not damaged all you need is 20 laps on the coticule without slurry. If that does not suffice: 10-20 laps on the 8K and back on the coticule for another 10-20 laps &c. There's all sorts of pyramid schemes in the wiki that you can use as well. I don't bother with them and use the above scheme.

I'm always at least 50 xstrokes on the coticules, sometimes 100. Off an 8k could it be more to remove the 8k edge?Quote:

i always remeber when i came of the 8k norton with a shave ready edge . I only did 20 laps on my la grossjaune and it was perfect. it will depend how good the edge is of the 8k. the 8k edge should be smooth and shave ready. the coticule with 20/30 laps should just make the edge ever so slightly more smoother but only slight. if coming of 8k with a under par edge the coticule will not work unless you use a lot of strokes and still may fail , this goes for any finisher. with a coticule i no for a fact i carn't over do it, so i'd most likely think nothing of doing 50/75 x strokes on water. I's always shave of 8k first on one side then if i'm more than happy i'd defanatley give the edge 30 or so, 20 would work. probably best going in twentys and testing. that way you will no the right amount of laps that works, its the only way you will no. if i did 75 and it worked i'd do 75 every time ....Quote:

I just did around 40 rolling x-strokes on the coticule with plain water. Edge polish looks great, and the razor seems finer than yesterday. Will shave with it in the AM. I'm pretty excited.

I very rarely use slurry, certainly not for finishing purposes at least. As with all natural stones YMMV, but my coticule is fairly hard so 20-30 laps will do very little. Using water only I usually test after 50 laps, and it's not uncommon to go up to 100. Results are great. I guess sometimes more is more lol....
