    Default 10k naniwa

does any one shave directly off the 10k naniwa? i've had one for a long time and never realy gave it much use . the first time i finished on the 10k s/s, i found it to be a little harsh... so i never used it again.. untill this last two weeks i have used it quite a bit. I've used it on a shave ready edge . I've done 10 laps before each shave and after aprox 30 the 10k realy kicked in. I could'nt beleive how smooth and easy the razor shaved . i've even honed a razor on the coticule with slurry skipped the dilutions skipped water finishing, jumped staright onto 10k naniwa with a couple of sets of light half stroke's, you could use circles. then finished with 40 light x strokes and the edge was realy nice and very smooth. i could defantley recomend the 10k as a finisher or easily a touch up hone . I've never recomended the 10k , now i have used it fully i can say these high grit naniwas are the business. the 10k could easily replace pasted strop ..

I see more and more posts tempting me to get a naniwa 10 or 12k these days as a back up for a razor that isn't quite there off a coticule... one of these days

I have long ago stopped using my 12k SS, before I jump on naturals to finish an edge, my last synthetic is 10k SS, always liked the stone and the edges from it.

i would say the 10k is plenty. then i'd use a natural stone just to have natural finish..

I've only recently acquired my 12K Naniwa but I'm finding that it if I go from a synthetic 6K to 20 laps on the naniwa with a light slurry (from lapping) then 20 with just water the edge I get is lovely.

I never found that slurry on either the 12 or 10k SS helped me get anywhere. I also found those two stone to give just about the same edge on most razors - albeit the 10k took a bit longer to get there. Maybe it's just me - but I was finding the 10 k better as the last stone when I was going to .25 mono diamond on leather. It seemed that I always had a smoother edge than I got with the 12k and then diamond.

I have used the 12k earlier, and now have the 10k. Both are were nice, I shave directly off the 10k nowadays, and had very nice smooth and sharp edges off of it. Definitely a very nice choice, for finishing or for touch-ups too.

The 10k Superstone from Naniwa has been a favourite in German forums for years now, whereas here at SRP the SS 12k seems to have had more followers.
I never tried the 12k but finished a razor on the SS10k just yesterday, after using lapping film exclusively for a while. I must say the SS10k is as good as it gets.
The polish it delivers is awesome. And it is so quick, Gary. Like you said it can be used directly after the Coticule or a medium grit japanaese stone with slurry.
This is my routine if in a hurry. Set the bevel on my Ohira with slurry until it shaves arm hairs and finish on the SS10k. Presto (not recommendet for beginners, though)

    Gary,
I've been having a really bad case of HAD lately. Really thinking about polishers and looking at Jnats, other coticules, etc. I've had the Naniwa's kind of put away for awhile, but after reading your post and remembering how silky smooth the 10k feels, I dragged it out, honed a new Henckels Friodur INOX on a coticule and then finished on the 10k, stropped on web and leather, no paste and got a really smooth good shave. I'm not sure I'm over the HAD, or ever will be, but the Naniwa's might see some more time on my bench again!

    Regards,

    Howard

I'm relatively new to razor honing and this forum but, i've had a 10k SS for a long time, i bought it for polishing pocket knives years ago.
I took a razor from SS 1k, to 2k green brick, 5k ss and then the 10k ss and got a better shave than what was on the pro honed razor. Thinking if I should go ahead and buy the naniwa SS 8k to fit in before it, or if thats a waste of time and money.
