Scratches from DMT 325 D8C on Naniwa SS 1k and 3k

Hi Folks,

I started to lap a set of new Naniwa Super Stones tonight using a new DMT 325 D8C. While I was doing the 3k stone, I noticed the 1k had some very fine scratches on that you could see when it was dry. I let the 3k dry and you could also see scratches on that too - I stopped and didn't move on to the rest of the set. They are very fine, and you can't catch your nail in them. I ended up using a Nagura stone to all but remove them.

I've done some searching and have read that its probably due to a high diamond on the DMT, and I can remove it with a screwdriver. Can anyone clarify how you do this? Maybe with a diagram?

Also, these scratches are so fine and only show when they are dry - I imagine they will vanish with use, but would they affect the razors edge?

I would think the ss's after a bevel set would be scratch free especially if slurried so it should be okay and wouldn't affect your edge. I would use the 1k to lap the 3k

Sharpen a hunting or kitchen knife or take the round screwdriver shank and rub it vigorously over the DMT that should do the trick...

Although rubbing two Hones together is an accepted solution to smoothing the higher stone in many sharpening schools of thought you have to be a bit careful when you do it so that you do not embed 1k grit into the 3k hone.. This can make a difference with razors where it won't mean a thing to a knife or tool sharpener

I have always used an Arkansas stone for this as they are so hard and smooth, lapping one of these on the DMT would take out any high diamonds too

I didn't realise (although I should have done!) that just using it to sharpen something it would flatten the diamonds. I'd got "thats a lapping stone" into my head.

There's a cooks knife that won't even break the skin on a tomato at home, so I'll go to work on that with the DMT tonight :)
