40yrs of honing before SRP

Ya know some of us old timers managed a pretty damn fine shave long before we had access to the items available here. I used to get a bevel on a really fine carborundum, then a hard ark, trans ark, and my old strop. Used williams soap; still do. Spent time doing the prep and had great shaves.

An old dog can learn new trick. I added a norton 4/8, .5micron chomeOx, .1micron diamond spray. Is the shave better; well yeah. Still use a swaty to weekly tough up if needed. I guess the smooth shaves I got before came from lot and lots of practice with what I had. The prep and built up skill of shaving over many years still give pretty fine shaves. Greg

You didn't do anything different than zillions of men did back in the day. It really shows how we here obsess over this stuff and in looking for the nth degree of everything have lost sight of the fact it really doesn't take much to just get a great shave.

What I see is a necessary daily need that has turned into a passion. Nothing wrong with that. I have 2 gun safes with 80 long arms, 150 knives; point being- do I really need that much stuff? No, I just like it. I enjoy reading about all the gizmos, razors, sharpening and stropping skill you guys get into. I even adopt bits here and there. Those RADs and HADs give ya lots of pleasure. Go for it. You have an interesting and harmless hobby. That last 1% is a very elusive goal. Greg

Just like a modern Gillette Fusion eh? (sorry, only joking, I wouldn't go back to one of those if it were a choice between a Fusion and a shard of glass).

I was 40 years old before I tried a Safety and 45 before my first Straight Shave, so a late learner I suppose.
