Chipping steel during honing solution
Hey all,
Well I have this Bengall that i have been trying to hone up for quite a while but every time I try to put a bevel on it i would get close and the edge would crumble. This was driving me crazy and so it went on the shelf for a while. In that time I pondered what to do with it. It almost made it into the garbage I'm ashamed to say. I know everyone says that Bengall's are amazing razors so I was dumbfounded that this one was being such a problem.
So finally I decided to give it another try but instead of starting at 1k I started with slurry on my 4k. This quickly put a nice bevel on the razor with no chipping!! I was amazed how differently the razor reacted to this stone. Once I got to this level it was purely mathematical. After a bit of work on the 4k i switched to the 8k and then a WHIG/Welsh thuri with slurry and diluted to water. Some hand stropping and OMG what an edge this thing took. It has to be one of best honing results to date. I'll have to shave with it to be sure but I'm in awe.
So in conclusion, don't give up on a blade that doesn't like the regular progression. Persevere and you will be rewarded!!
