I would like to learn more about honing with back and forth strokes/Japanese honing/half strokes. I'm assuming these are refering to the same thing. If not can someone explain the difference? Are there good video or articles available?
Thanks

The answers you seek are on youtube. I don't know the name of the videos. But you may as well watch every honing video you can find. I did.
I'm not going to pretend to understand the differences, if there are any. Although I do most of my bevel setting, in the manner referred to as japanese style honing according to one of Gssixgun's vids.
Back and forth and Japanese honing are essentially the same thing,, However be careful when you apply that to Kamisori as it changes a bit because of pressure shifting during honing..
Half Strokes I don't use so I can't comment on how is works, the vids I have seen don't quite look the same though...
Warning:
Be very careful using all of these techniques, I am seeing vids out there that are not taking into account that Straight movements back and forth on any stone creates the likelihood of a frown very quickly.. You have to be moving the razor in two directions on the hone when using these systems, it has move Down and Diagonal then Up and Diagonal basically think X stroke as you are doing it...
