hi there, I'm currently restring this razor got scales made for it just need to pin them however I like to hone my razors first for some reason. this is my first wedge razor and im struggling with that one. I am trying to hone it as presented in video by gssixgun on youtube, however razor is slightly warped. i shaded razor with black marker pen and rubbed it on stone to show the pattern where metal is removed, the question is, would that razor be shave ready? regards Rafal
I'm not sure it's warped so much as the result of lots of honing, some of that not performed particularly well. At the risk of starting a new taping thread, I'd lay three layers of 3M tape on that bad boy in a heart beat. That will eliminate additional hone wear and minimize the size of the bevel. I've done it before, and the result will shave fine. A rolling-X stroke will be required to even things out.
I would do the 3 layers too :)
This is one of those razors that confounds me with our link to the past though on another note,,
We know some facts here
It was shaving in the past
They were honing with the spine on the hone
The edge is barely meeting the hone except for maybe 1 inch of blade
Was this why DE razors were such a success so fast
I know totally :OT but these razors always make me ponder the past
OP: Tape it up, and it'll shave just fine. As everyone else said.
Gssixgun: Perhaps a hanging strop with abrasives pasted on it, could render this result? I'm thinking strips of near sandpaper grade abrasives ofc.

I had a Wosty that looked like that. I honed until my hands fell off. Then I honed some more. It ended up being my learner razor. That said, the bevel looks all kinds of weird now but I did NOT ruin the razor, and now it's easy for me to hone. How it got out of whack I'll never know. But with all the meat on these wedges you can hone a lot without ruining things.
Three layers of tape should certainly get the bevel on the ground. But resetting the grind (what I suppose you'd call what I did) might be a good option too. Maybe Glen can chime in on that.

thanks for all the reply's, sorry I didn't reply earlier just had extremely busy weekend. 3 layers of tape sound like a good idea, will try it later on today and post the results. totally agree with you glen if it was shaving in past why wouldn't it shave now.
And to your question Lemur I actualy don't have anything I could check it on (living in small university apartment and here it is where I restore razors) but I am pretty sure my hones are relatively flat.

so I have tried three layers of tape and honed at 45 deg just like in Glen's videos however the result was the same, so I thought I will hone it without any tape just to straighten things up and it worked, it doesn't look the best just yet it will need to be sanded down and polished again but here is the stage at which it is now, the bevel was set with 3 layers of tape.

My hones were certainly flat, and my wedge came out much the same way. At some point I will put in the work to make it look good like it's supposed to. In the mean time it shaves like it's supposed to!
I can only guess that while it used to shave at some point, somewhere along the way it suffered abuse resulting in uneven wear and poor performance. Perhaps that's why it was set aside?

Honing wedges falls under the category of "are we having fun yet". The only one I have behaved like the one under discussion here. I finally made a false spine, like a frame back, out of some flexible clear tubing and taped that on. That worked a little better but at least I wasn't trying to shave the side of the blade down. I did get a small more even bevel in the end.

Yep, wedges can sometimes be an exercise in patience and persistence, and faith for that matter.
It looks like you are getting somewhere with that razor, so congratulations on the work so far. Keep at it - I am sure that eventually you'll get it shave ready.

that is actually a great idea, the only concern I would have with it thou would be an angle of the bevel, I would imagine steeper angle gives sharper more comfortable shave but I could be wrong.Quote:

Well, what can I say except I tried it and finally got a fairly consistent bevel that 3 layers of tape would not give me. If you look at the last post you can see the remnants of the funky bevel I was getting using 3 layers of tape just above the actual bevel set with the tubing. I am NOT suggesting anyone try it out on their own razors but for FYI only. Also to let you know that some wedges can be real buggers. I do have a modern German wedge that is a breeze to hone but to call it a wedge/derb is laughable after seeing something like a W&B near wedge with virtually no concavity to the blade. Anyhow have fun gents, I am off the idea of wedges after that W&B I got. If I needed that kind of aggravation I would have stayed married to my ex.

I'm running a Thomas Turner wedge over my DMT 600 a little now and then, it will be fine some day, nu hurry with that one.
Every time we hone a full hollow we should really thank someone else for 99% of the work done on removing steel.
No problem Jim, I just wanted to make sure that everyone understood it was an FYI deal. Without doing that I had a bevel that had more big waves to it than the ocean. I think Lemur has got it right and we should really be thankful for full hollows or what passes for a modern wedge.Quote:
