Qhestion about HHT
Hi all, maybe the answer to this has been posted many times. But I want to know
When you hone a razor, when exactly the razor should pass the HHT?? after the 8k hone?? after the finishing stone??
The thing is that I have been able to pass the HHT only after th Crox and leather stropping. For some reason I have never been able to make a razor pass the HHT just after the finishing stone.
I was wandering if my razors could pass the HHT after the finishing stone maybe I could have a better edges after the CRox and leather strop

The real question is how does the razor shave your face?
-
If you have a fresh double-edge blade around, try HHT on it. Then realign your standards.
-
I've read some guys say they get it off the 1k. A good friend doesn't feel like he is 'there' unless it gets it at 8k. I can consistently get it after 8k + stropping on linen leather, sometimes leather only. Anyway, like Catrent said, the shaves the thing. HHT doesn't mean the shave is going to be smooth and close.
-
I have achieved the HHt only once on one of my razors. To be honest it didn't shave any better than my other razors. So, I don't even bother with it anymore.

Using my hair I can pop after 1k near everytime
Using the wife's hair it has to be after 8k and perfect stropping
What did we just learn about the HHT ?????
-
HHT is easy after DMT 325 :)
Really. Because at that point the edge is very 'toothy' and hairs will grab immediately.
I could usually pop hair easily after the 8K, but then after a coticule or nakayama finish, I couldn't anymore.

The HHT will work after 1K because the edge is toothy. I usually get good results after 8K because the edge is sharp.

As Mr. Glen notes, it all depends on the hair. I only use my wife's hair for the test and typically I do the test before stropping then after to see if I'm doing 'something right' when stropping. In other threads i've mentioned that I don't usually get the hair to pass the hht right off my stone, even my ozuku but once stropped properly every razor i've ever honed will pass the hht. It definitely doesn't equal shave ready but it can be used as a diagnostic procedure to see if your stropping is improving your edge.
-
I use the HHT to make sure I have honed properly along the entire blade and I use my hair (I have very thick hair) so I know that when it starts popping my hair it near ready for a strop and shave test.

It's not really about cutting the hair, but how it cuts that equals a pass for me.
If the hair touches the edge and splits into two pieces then it's a pass. Usually it's after 8k for me.

If you go back though this thread, the one thing that defines the HHT is whether you have "Calibrated" it to your hair, along with how the edge shaves from a positive HHT if you happen to achieve one...
The only real trick to using the HHT is the calibration...
This is exactly why it gets so much negative press, there is no "Standard" so when a Newb says the words "I tried the HHT and it didn't pass" it means less then nothing because there has been no calibration.. Even after you have a meaniful HHT that works for you on your hair, and it relates to the way your razor shaves off of your stones/strop on your face it really doesn't mean anything to anyone else.. All the sharpness tests are meant to be used by the person honing the razor and are subjective to their interpetation..
We can simply explain how they work for us and what we are looking for from them, and hope that this helps each person to develop their own subjective sharpness tests...
Even the suggestion of using a DE edge to test your HHT is just a starting point, I asked on another forum that is mostly DE shavers if they could test the HHT on their DE blades especially if they changed brands of blades... The results were much less "Standard" then desired :(
Basically like everything else in the sport you have to take the time to learn and practice and develop your system...

In the beginning of my straight razor honing journey I thought my hair was too fine to pass HHT. That was the problem. Then one day I happened to notice a used Feather DE blade sitting on the counter top. I grabbed it and the HHT that would not pass was cut easily and repeatedly. That was when I knew that it was my honing and not the hair.
OTOH, we are not all playing with the same deck of cards. Some people's hair will be more difficult to cut based on the individual characteristics. I have had some of the hairs out of my hair brush that would not pass HHT with a new Feather DE blade.
I'm looking to find an attractive young gal who likes old guys, doesn't ask for much, and who has hair that will pass HHT every time. Will update when I find her. :)
