Touch up
My hartsteel was pulling a bit. i ordered a 12k. a balsa strop and paste. But its not here yet. So I Put some tape. 6 Pass no weight on the 8k. 25 Strokes on the leather strop without any prep on it and i had a great shave. Is it how its supposed to be done? cause it worked.

Sounds like a success story to me.

I do touchups however the razor is honed; so if it were honed with tape, I'd use tape.
As far as how far down to go grit wise; go as far as need be. I for one would rather drop too low than not low enough.
And yes, you can get a great shave off an 8k.
In the end, whatever works is what is right.

Most around here are addicts for this stuff. Back in the day 8K was the standard as a hone for finishing.
If you need a true touch-up you shouldn't need much. Personally I start high and go lower if I need to.

Great job Mike! Sounds like you nailed it. I wouldn't have used tape unless it was used before. The 8k doesn't remove much metal and for a refresh will not impart much if not any visible hone wear in my view.

If the razor had been honed with one layer of tape, you're fine. If you added one layer of tape where there was none, you now have a secondary bevel, and you're fine. Secondary bevels shave at least as well as primary. Just make sure you use at that one layer of tape next time you hone it.

On the hart web site it says they use tape, but I should ask Phil at classic edge if he did. I did not know if 8k was low enough, my previous experiences were not successful at all. But het, a 300$ razor should work better..lol

That's good work right out of the blocks! When your 12k comes, do it again with the same light touch and enjoy. What flavor of 12k did you get?

its a Naniwa 12k. I received my kit finally yesterday. I had to try it right away (i did not shave for four days to be able to test my razor after) I used my stone and the slurry. I made about 8 passes with the razor, i dried it made about 20 passes on the balsa with crox, cleaned it and 30 passes on the leather. Now i have a really smooth edge, a lot smoother on the skin than with the 8k only, and its sharper. The first pass almost removed all the hairs and absolutely no pulling. Its still not perfect but im getting there. Now i know i can do it without damaging the razor. Last year i tried on my dovo with the norton 4/8k and i had to send it to be honed caused it was worse after my experimentations, i was more carefull with the hart and i have good equipment and maybe a better technique, so now im confident that i can take care of my razors and in case of a zombie apocalypse i will stay clean shaven!

Well done, sometimes a razor needs some more strokes on the 12k ,I personally do there 20 and them qrox and 60 leather. But id it works by your Hart on this way,Who am I ;)
