I am constantly tinkering with hone progression and have recently found what I consider a good one. Please try it if you have the stones. Bring a razor to shave ready on an 8k stone. Then do 10 laps on a 12k Naniwa. Then 30 w/slurry on a Thuringian. Then 30 more on Thuringian under a running faucet. Then 30 to 40 plain water on a Gokumyo 20,000 grit stone. Strop and shave. Awesome and deadly sharp...........................Jerry

Seems to me that the Thuri is not needed. You should be able to jump from a 12K Nani to the 20K stone without a bridge.

you can jump on the Gokumyo right after 10k Naniwa Super Stone and it works like a charm.
The Suehiro is very capable of taking on a 10k Edge and making it exceptional.

I also have a Chosera 10k. I will try the jump from that stone directly to the 20k.

On the point about the Thuri as an intermediary between the 10 and 20K stones, I can see the rationale of just skipping to the 20K. But sometimes, IMO, an intermediate stone does more than just bridge a gap in grits - it can sometimes be about how they cut as well. I know, for example, that I could jump from my 8K to (one of my) Jnats without too much trouble, but that if I use my Escher in between I seem to get a nicer edge off the Jnat once I arrive there.
It could just be my OCD, but I really do think the intermediate work on the Escher imparts scratches that interact more favourably with the action of the Jnat. The Gokumyo sounds like an entirely different beast of course, so I could just be waffling on about things I don't know about.
In any event I've never tried honing under running water - I think I'll try that. And I would personally be really interested in any results you get from experimenting with edges produced using both progressions: straight to the 20K versus a Thuri intermediary.

I stopped carrying a wallet years ago. It remains empty because of all the razors, hones and strops I bought.
Gokumyos are reasonably priced and should be tried by all capable honers. Just do it.....

I still love my Jnats and use them all the time, but when I need to hone a bunch of razors fast a full synthetic progression with Suehiro as finisher is what I use.
As most of you know I'm a Shapton GS junkie, have any of you compared the Gokumyo 20K to the Shapton 30K? I have found few razors can handle the 30K & it is easy to overhone on it.
My personal "go to" routine is a progression to 16K and finish on Escher & it's one of those that works every time on every razor. Most of my personal razors are of harder steel and this Gokumyo 20K has my interest...

The Gokumyo, while every bit as fine, (the grit rating-system used on them are different) is another entity entirely.
Out of the approx. 5-600 hundred razors I have put across it, more or less every single razor has benefitted from using it on them.
No microchipping or overhoning this far, except from on one of my custom razors.
And that thing is chippy regardless of what stone(s) I use on it...

Thanks guys...I GUESS...hopefully I will have a few bucks left over from my trip so that I can add yet another finisher to the mix. Sounds like a good finisher though in all reality. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like it's edge is similar to Escher, but only a little more sharp/crisp feeling during the shave?
For what it is worth Sham said the edge is like Escher. I would say it is on par with the best Jnats I have tried. I think it is a great stone to have if you can afford it.Quote:

I am hoping to get some clarification regarding the micro chipping. Is this a description of an over honed edge? I just received my Gokumyo 20k and have a couple of razors that have micro chips on the edge. My question is: do I take the razors right to the Gokumyo or take them back to 4K/8k then to the Gokumyo ?

Of course it will not hurt to put the razors to the Suehiro first and see what happens, it may work who knows. If the Suehiro is too slow, take the razor to 8k and see if you can get the chips out, if they are indeed microscopic that should work, if not you need to go to the 4k and then up again.Quote:
