Hello, I was curious to know what the bevel angle is for a de blade. I know there are many makers and Im sure it varies. I have heard straights are 15-20 degrees. If this angle was made shallower, what result can you expect? Or would the edge be too fragile? Too sharp or rough to shave with? Curious if anybody has any info. And I guess the only way to change the angle to be shallower would be to grind the spine and not the edge. Thanks.
Multiple bevels..
Many machine ground edges are done with 2 or even 3 micro bevels, this creates a slightly higher bevel angle..
Also take into account that locking the blade in in a double edge does slightly flex the blade which changes the cutting angle, add in the guard and its anybodys guess. With a straight you control the cutting angle, and only consider the initial bevel thats ground and honed in, less muss and fuss to me. Ive heard of even 20 degrees giving good shaves, you gotta find the sweet spot for you and that particular steel.
I was thinking maybe a shallower bevel angle might be capable of producing a "sharper" edge (im thinking it wouldnt last long at all though). I got an edge from .3 micron al/ox film that feels almost as sharp as a feather blade in a shavette. Thats .3 film on granite surface plate. Then 20 laps on crox on linen. HHt before the crox was hht4, after crox hht 4-5 . Meaningless I know but the shave was excellent also. It is very smooth IMO, although there are as many opinions as shavers when it comes to just about everything shaving related!
