Hello from Paris ! (well, not too far anyway)

Hi to all,

Greetings from France (yes, that Paris, not the one in Texas). I'm kinda new to the world of straight razor shaving, although not a complete beginner ; I started using a straight razor one year and a half ago. However, the experience was somewhat of a personal failure. The fact is that time, I used a razor which was not properly prepared for shaving. I'm "back to the business" with a new one, and since it's a much better experience, I still have a lot to learn from you guys.
I don't know for the US, where you seem to be mainly originated from, but in France, straight razor shaving is an almost extinct art. It's not very easy to find new razors and quality products (oils, etc). Of course, there is always the Internet.
Well, that's it. I'm sure I'll enjoy my stay among you people !

There is lots of information here to assist you with straight razor shaving. The members--many of whom live in European countries--are also quite helpful. They and the rest of us will be more than willing to provide you with advice and encouragement.

Your remark about the virtual extinction of straight razor shaving in France is surprising, given the fact that your country has one of the oldest straight razor manufacturers in existence--Thiers-Issard--as well as Martin de Candre, which makes a top-notch shaving soap.

You're absolutely right about Thiers-Issard : my personal razor comes from that brand. Nevertheless, I think it's really a matter of passionate people, a small circle. It's really hard to find a straight razor "in the street", except for very specialized stores (like gun stores, which, in France, are usually more "knives-oriented"). There was a time when they were easier to find. Same for the fine shaving soaps, creams, etc : you can't just walk in any store and find some. I just come back from London, and it's a different story there.
We also have a french forum for straight razor shaving ; but like I said, when I tell people I shave the classic way, the only answer I get is : "why ?" ;)

Your situation in France isn't much different than in India where I've been trying to help a young man. You would think that with all the time the British were there that straight razors, strops etc would be abundant, but alas, that's not the case! I've had to ship him razors a barbers hone and a strop!

Well anyway, he's well on his way! I'm so glad that I could be of some help!
