Hello from Yorkshire (england) :-)

Just a quick hello before I go hunting further through the site, which by the way looks like a wealth of information! :-)

I've had a few shaves with the barber and have decided to take the plunge and get a razor myself. It'll be mainly for detailing/trimming (if thats the right term lol) as apposed to full face shave as I tend to have stubble most days.

I was going to go down the route of a shavette but nobody had any in stock at the moment so I went for a full on straight razor.

Here's the one I've gone for as my first. I know its a Bontgen & Sabin Solingenwith the term "Mois" stamped on the shank/tang, and has celluloid sclaes, other than that I don't know the year etc but i would be very interested to know if anyone has an idea ?

Can't giva ya much info, but I can welcome you to SRP and say what a beauty of a razor you have and let the camaraderie begin. Oh and hope you like spending money on things like soaps of all kinds(seriously just posted like this for a new fella from Poland) aftershaves, hones, brushes and the list of acquisitions diseases galore. that's what we call it for example if you start taking a fancy to say brushes...then you got BAD, Razors RAD and so on and etc. WELCOME !:chapeau

Now to your razor! That's a nice looking one!! Now to the Big Question!!! Was it 'Shave Ready' (Honed/Stropped and ready to go)when you bought it?? :shrug: If it's not, you will only be disappointed learning this age old art!!

It's been a long strange journey for me these last 4-5 years since I took up the art, but I've learned so much and made some many friends that it's been one of the best endeveors I've ever taken on!

As long as I'm able to, I'll never go back to using disposable crap again! I have aquired some DE's for back up, but they seldom see any usage!

Providing that your razor is properly honed you may find yourself clean shaven more and more frequently. but be care some folks get so addicted to shaving with a straight they shave there head, legs, arms, cats, dogs and just about an other creature then can smear lather on.

but usually the first to go is stubble, although a few grow a moustache as opposed to learning to shave the upper lip properly.

take your time, reads, watch good videos and ask questions. if at all possible try and find a "mentor" near you a couple hours spent with one of them will really help you out.

Hi and welcome. Beautiful looking razor in good condition. Make sure to get it professionally honed and get a cheap strop as you will shred your first one and it would be a shame to ruin an antique. If you drop a pic in the razor forum you may get some more info on the razor. Good luck. Ed

I bought it from a guy with great feedback with razors, he described it as "cleaned with no pitting to the blade, slight marks to the tang, full hollow ground 6/8 mirror polished. No chips or cracks in the blade, scales are in great condition with a good polish to them. The razor is Shave ready and will pass any test and has been sterilised with Barbiside."

I only purchased it yesterday so I don't have it in my hand yet :( I'll let ouy know what its like once it arrives.

I was thinking something like the standard plus below, if I cant get hold of a vintage strop that takes my fancy

both of those strop option are great and the owners of the shops are members here. for the record I have made purchases from the invisible edge and have been very satisfied wit the edges on his razors. I have not used the strop shop but they are very well liked and have a great rep for service after the sale.

owning both vintage and new strops, unless you can touch the vintage one before buying you might be investing is more problems like dried out leather, nicks and cracks and pasted surfaces.... NOS vintage strops cost nearly the same as new usually.

Always good to see an "old worlder" join. Best way to use this forum is to jump in head first. Ask lots of questions and feel free to give advice to other lads starting out.
Also more to here than shaving, we also chat about what we're eating, drinking, smoking etc. Just follow the golden rule and always post a pic.

Hello and welcome, it could say " themois" or "the mois" not sure which. But that probably wasn't much help either.
I think people used to be able to get their name etc stamped on tangs so it could have belonged to someone with that name.
We have a few razor buffs who may be able to shed more light, martin103 springs to mind, but there are definitely more.

I've dropped a post in the razor section which i've followed up on and found its between 1900-1932, it was a brand "the Mois" which imho makes pretty cool, a little bit of history to it :)
